Intro:
Prodigal is excited to present El Espejo II, a bright and expressive washed Gesha from the Planadas region of Tolima, Colombia. Grown and meticulously tended by Yerly Marcela Morales, this lot showcases the clean purity and elegant fruit character that the Gesha varietal is renowned for, with a juicy, floral‑forward cup that rewards thoughtful filter brewing.
The Producer:
This coffee comes from Yerly Marcela Morales, who manages a two‑hectare farm in Planadas where she’s invested in enhancing quality through careful cultivation and attention to detail. Working with local partners and industry collaborators, Yerly focuses on maximising the potential of Gesha — a delicate and demanding varietal — through timely harvesting, selective picking, and precision in processing.
The Process:
El Espejo II Gesha is prepared using a classic washed method designed to emphasise clarity and varietal nuance. After selective hand‑picking, ripe cherries are briefly fermented (typically ~24 hours), then thoroughly washed to remove mucilage before slow drying on raised beds over 15–20 days. This process preserves fresh acidity and aromatic complexity, resulting in a clean and balanced cup.
The Cup:
In the cup, this Colombian Gesha delivers a vibrant and layered profile. Sweet ripe plum 🍑 and crisp apple 🍎 mingle with delicate floral aromatics 🌸, giving brightness and clarity to every sip. The finish is elegant and clean, with a refined structure that makes this coffee especially rewarding as a filter brew — alive with clarity and subtle depth.
Overall:
Prodigal’s El Espejo II (Colombia, Washed, Gesha) is a refined and expressive filter coffee that highlights both the elegant character of the Gesha varietal and the thoughtful care of its producer. With juicy fruit notes, floral complexity, and remarkable clarity, it’s a standout example of Colombian specialty coffee at its best — perfect for fans of delicate, nuanced, and bright filter profiles.
What is the roast recency?
We recommend brewing with beans that are at least two weeks off roast. All beans are roasted to peak flavour at around 6-12 weeks. We have the option to either purchase standard beans (at least 2 weeks but no longer than 6 weeks off roast), or rested beans (at least 7 weeks off roast, no longer than 12 - should we have any left in stock!). For peak flavour, if you are looking to use immediately, we recommend purchasing the rested beans. If you are adding to your rotation of beans, we recommend purchasing the standard and allowing the beans to naturally rest and mature whilst you rotate through other beans.
What does 'Filter' or 'Espresso' Roast mean?
Typically filter is roasted lighter than espresso, though this is not always the case. Several factors play into what brands a Prodigal coffee as 'filter' or 'espresso', which includes the roast profile - i.e. how the beans are roasted, not just how developed a roast it is. It doesn't preclude you from using the beans for espresso though!
