Intro:

Hydrangea is delighted to present Gesha Washed Jaramillo; Hacienda La Esmeralda, an exquisite expression of the iconic Gesha varietal from one of Panama’s most legendary coffee producers. This washed lot demonstrates the refined elegance and clarity that have made Gesha world‑famous — balanced with bright citrus highlights, delicate florals, and a lingering sweetness that rewards thoughtful filter brewing.

The Producer:

This coffee comes from the Jaramillo family at Hacienda La Esmeralda in Boquete, Chiriquí — a farm synonymous with premium Gesha and high standards in specialty coffee. With decades of commitment to quality, the Jaramillos have helped shape Panama’s reputation on the international stage, consistently producing lots that exemplify both terroir and varietal potential. Their meticulous approach to cultivation, selection, and processing ensures that each harvest lives up to their storied legacy.

The Process:

This lot is processed using a washed method to emphasise clarity, structure, and varietal purity. Ripe cherries are hand‑picked and depulped soon after harvest. The beans then undergo careful fermentation to remove mucilage before being thoroughly washed and dried under controlled conditions. This classic washed technique, paired with the high altitude and cool microclimate of Boquete, encourages crisp acidity, layered aromatics, and transparent fruit character in the cup.

The Cup:

In the cup, Gesha Washed Jaramillo is vibrant and nuanced. Bright mandarin 🍊 zest brings a refreshing lift, while a floral bouquet 🌼 adds delicate perfume and complexity. Underlying sweetness reminiscent of honey 🍯 enriches the mid‑palate and finish, giving the coffee a refined sweetness that lingers beautifully. The overall profile is elegant, clean, and deeply satisfying — a hallmark of well‑executed washed Gesha.

Overall:

Hydrangea’s Gesha Washed Jaramillo; Hacienda La Esmeralda is a pristine example of Panama’s specialty coffee excellence. With citrus brightness, floral elegance, and honeyed sweetness, it offers a truly memorable filter coffee experience — one that highlights both terroir and the exceptional skill of its producer. Whether enjoyed as a morning ritual or a contemplative afternoon cup, this lot exemplifies what great Gesha can deliver.

We recommend brewing with beans that are at least two weeks off roast. All beans are roasted to peak flavour at around 6-12 weeks. We have the option to either purchase standard beans (at least 2 weeks but no longer than 6 weeks off roast), or rested beans (at least 7 weeks off roast, no longer than 12 - should we have any left in stock!). For peak flavour, if you are looking to use immediately, we recommend purchasing the rested beans. If you are adding to your rotation of beans, we recommend purchasing the standard and allowing the beans to naturally rest and mature whilst you rotate through other beans.

What does 'Filter' or 'Espresso' Roast mean?

Typically filter is roasted lighter than espresso, though this is not always the case. Several factors play into what brands a Manhattan coffee as 'filter' or 'espresso', which includes the roast profile - i.e. how the beans are roasted, not just how developed a roast it is. It doesn't preclude you from using the beans for espresso though!
