Intro:

Hydrangea is excited to present Landrace Washed from Habtamu Fekadu Aga & Chelbesa Outgrowers, a bright and elegant Ethiopian coffee from the famed Yirgacheffe (Chelbesa) region. This lot showcases the expressive nature of traditional Kurume and Dega landrace coffee — delivering clean, vibrant fruit characters and floral sweetness through a classic washed profile.

The Producer:

This coffee is sourced from Habtamu Fekadu Aga, also known as Kuri Mountain Coffee, and the network of Chelbesa Outgrowers who supply ripe cherries to local washing stations in the region. Habtamu inherited his family’s farm in Kuri kebele and has since expanded to include cherries from many smallholder growers across Guji and Yirgacheffe. Together, they cultivate traditional Ethiopian landrace varietals such as Kurume and Dega — varieties prized for their complex aromatics and layered fruit profiles.

The Process:

This lot is crafted using a meticulous washed process. Fully ripe cherries are hand‑picked and floated to remove defects before depulping. The beans are then fermented to remove mucilage, thoroughly washed, and dried on raised beds under high‑altitude conditions. This approach preserves clarity, brightness, and varietal expression, letting the coffee’s innate sweetness and aromatic complexity shine.

The Cup:

In the cup, this Ethiopian washed lot is clean, vibrant, and expressive. Expect a sweet honey 🍯 note rounding the body, paired with bright citrus 🍊 acidity that lifts the profile, and delicate nectarine 🍑 fruit character that lingers through the finish. The result is a refreshing and nuanced filter coffee with both clarity and depth, ideal for pour‑over and other gentle extraction methods.

Overall:

This is a refined and engaging Ethiopian coffee that celebrates both heritage varietals and thoughtful processing. With its honeyed sweetness, citrus brightness, and juicy stone fruit tones, it offers a balanced and expressive filter experience — perfect for those who appreciate clean clarity and layered fruit complexity in their cup.

What is the roast recency?

We recommend brewing with beans that are at least two weeks off roast. All beans are roasted to peak flavour at around 6-12 weeks. We have the option to either purchase standard beans (at least 2 weeks but no longer than 6 weeks off roast), or rested beans (at least 7 weeks off roast, no longer than 12 - should we have any left in stock!). For peak flavour, if you are looking to use immediately, we recommend purchasing the rested beans. If you are adding to your rotation of beans, we recommend purchasing the standard and allowing the beans to naturally rest and mature whilst you rotate through other beans.

What does 'Filter' or 'Espresso' Roast mean?

Typically filter is roasted lighter than espresso, though this is not always the case. Several factors play into what brands a Manhattan coffee as 'filter' or 'espresso', which includes the roast profile - i.e. how the beans are roasted, not just how developed a roast it is. It doesn't preclude you from using the beans for espresso though!
