Intro:

Hydrangea is excited to present this Washed Gesha from Café Granja La Esperanza, a refined expression of a world‑renowned varietal grown at high elevation in Cauca, Colombia. This lot beautifully balances floral elegance, bright fruit character, and clarity, making it a standout choice for thoughtful filter brewing.

The Producer:

This coffee comes from Café Granja La Esperanza, a pioneering Colombian coffee producer and one of the world’s most respected growers of rare varieties like Gesha. Rigoberto and Luis Eduardo Herrera lead the operation across several farms, with Finca Las Margaritas being a key high‑altitude site for specialty lots. Their deep expertise in cultivation and processing has helped place this estate on the global specialty coffee map.

The Process:

This lot is processed using a traditional washed method, emphasizing clarity and varietal purity. Ripe cherries are carefully hand‑picked, depulped, and fermented to remove mucilage, then thoroughly washed and dried under controlled conditions. This classic approach highlights the delicate aromatics and vibrant acidity that washed Gesha is prized for.

The Cup:

Bright, elegant, and layered — this coffee opens with delicate jasmine 🌼 floral notes that set the stage for deeper fruit expression. Balanced blackberry 🍇 richness adds depth, while mandarin 🍊 zest brings a juicy, refreshing acidity. Together these elements create a clean, nuanced filter cup with refined sweetness and lingering aromatics.

Overall:

This is a refined and expressive coffee that celebrates both terroir and varietal excellence. With its floral lift, complex fruit character, and crisp clarity, it’s an exceptional choice for filter brewing and a compelling example of what Gesha can deliver when grown and processed with intention.

We recommend brewing with beans that are at least two weeks off roast. All beans are roasted to peak flavour at around 6-12 weeks. We have the option to either purchase standard beans (at least 2 weeks but no longer than 6 weeks off roast), or rested beans (at least 7 weeks off roast, no longer than 12 - should we have any left in stock!). For peak flavour, if you are looking to use immediately, we recommend purchasing the rested beans. If you are adding to your rotation of beans, we recommend purchasing the standard and allowing the beans to naturally rest and mature whilst you rotate through other beans.

What does 'Filter' or 'Espresso' Roast mean?

Typically filter is roasted lighter than espresso, though this is not always the case. Several factors play into what brands a Manhattan coffee as 'filter' or 'espresso', which includes the roast profile - i.e. how the beans are roasted, not just how developed a roast it is. It doesn't preclude you from using the beans for espresso though!
