Region: Uraga – Guji, Ethiopia | Variety: 74110 & 74112 | Process: Natural
Datura's first-ever natural Ethiopian offering—and one that sets the bar high. This lot is exceptionally clean for a natural process, with bright yellow fruit character (think pineapple), layered with blueberry and a red fruit core that delivers a jammy, textured sweetness throughout.
Sourced from smallholder producers across Uraga, cherries are delivered to privately run washing stations serving as local collection hubs. Farms lie within 10–20 km of these stations, often tucked into forested highlands rich in biodiversity.
Uraga sits in the northern part of Guji, neighbouring Odo Shakisso and Hambela. While all three regions are known for quality, Uraga is unique—its coffee lineage runs deep, and may even predate its more famous neighbours. Among the heirloom types here is a rare yellow-cherry varietal called Wallagga, hinting at the area’s historic genetic diversity.
This lot features selected cultivars 74110 and 74112—landrace varieties catalogued by Ethiopia’s Jimma Agricultural Research Centre for their strong disease resistance and distinctive flavour profiles. As Ethiopia shifts from generic “heirloom” labelling to precise cultivar classification, we're now able to celebrate both variety and terroir with greater clarity and consistency.
Coffee here is cultivated in polyculture systems alongside enset (false banana), a culturally vital crop. Enset stores water in its trunk, providing a buffer during dry seasons and creating a stable microclimate under which coffee thrives. This deep integration of ecology and tradition shapes not just the coffee’s flavour—but the land that produces it.
Flavour Notes: Blueberry, Yellow Fruits, Strawberry, Floral
We recommend brewing with beans that are at least two weeks off roast. All beans are roasted to peak flavour at around 8-12 weeks. We have the option to either purchase standard beans (at least 2 weeks but no longer than 6 weeks off roast), or rested beans (at least 7 weeks off roast, no longer than 12). For peak flavour, if you are looking to use immediately, we recommend purchasing the rested beans. If you are adding to your rotation of beans, we recommend purchasing the standard and allowing the beans to naturally rest and mature whilst you rotate through other beans.
