PURPLE LEAF TYPICA

A local mutation of the storied Typica lineage, Purple Leaf Typica traces its genetic roots to the Blue Mountains of Jamaica, but has evolved into something entirely its own at Yunlan Estate. The name refers to the striking purplish hue at the leaf tips — a visual marker of the plant’s adaptation to the mountain soils of Yunnan.

Grown exclusively on the Yunlan Estate at 1,600–1,800 masl, these trees develop slowly — maturing over 7 to 11 years. The combination of high elevation, volcanic soil, and careful, daily farming practices results in a cup that is unmistakably Yunlan: structured, refined, and deeply expressive of place.

ABOUT THE ESTATE

Yunlan Estate was founded in 1999 by Shanghai native Mr. Hongjun Zhang in the rainforest valley of Menghai County, part of Xishuangbanna, Yunnan. Since its inception, the estate has worked to redefine perceptions of Chinese specialty coffee, pairing scientific cultivation with a belief in natural terroir and the power of intentional farming.

With over 20 rare varietals growing at 1,750 meters, Yunlan’s farming model is hand-picked, lot-separated, and grounded in traditional processing: washed, sun-dried, and honey methods. While the global trend leans toward experimental fermentation, Yunlan Coffee maintains a conviction that clean, transparent processing better conveys the truth of the land.

As described by Mr. Hongjun Zhang, the estate’s founder:

“Each cup is a mini local chronicle — recording landscapes, seasons, and climate. It holds not just flavour, but the soul and terroir of its origin.”

Flavour Notes: Blackcurrant Fruitella, Lemongrass

What is the roast recency?

We recommend brewing with beans that are at least two weeks off roast. All beans are roasted to peak flavour at around 8-12 weeks. We have the option to either purchase standard beans (at least 2 weeks but no longer than 6 weeks off roast), or rested beans (at least 7 weeks off roast, no longer than 12). For peak flavour, if you are looking to use immediately, we recommend purchasing the rested beans. If you are adding to your rotation of beans, we recommend purchasing the standard and allowing the beans to naturally rest and mature whilst you rotate through other beans.
