INTRO

A beautifully expressive washed Typica showcasing the elegance and clarity that has made this historic variety one of the foundations of specialty coffee. Delicate florals, ripe tropical fruit, and structured sweetness come together in a refined and vibrant cup.

THE PRODUCER

Alejandra Angel produces coffee at Fincamigos in Antioquia, Colombia, with a focus on careful cultivation and processing designed to highlight the clarity and complexity of traditional varieties like Typica.

THE VARIETAL — TYPICA

Typica is one of the most historically significant and widely cultivated varieties of Coffea arabica, particularly throughout Central and South America. It is known for its exceptional cup quality potential at high altitude, though it is also characterized by low production yield and vulnerability to diseases such as coffee leaf rust.

The variety originated in southwestern Ethiopia before being transported to Yemen between the 15th and 16th centuries. By the early 1700s, Typica had spread from Yemen to India and then onward to Java in present-day Indonesia. Seeds from Java later became the foundation for the Typica lineage cultivated across the Americas.

In 1706, a single Typica plant was transported from Java to Amsterdam and planted in the Dutch royal botanical gardens. Descendants of this plant were later shared with French colonial territories, ultimately spreading throughout the Caribbean, Central America, and South America.

Although Typica is less commonly planted today due to its low productivity and disease susceptibility, it remains deeply respected for its elegance, florality, and refined cup character.

THE PROCESS

🍒 Selective harvesting — Carefully picked ripe cherries
💧 Washed processing — Highlights clarity, florality, and structure
☀️ Slow drying — Preserves sweetness and aromatic complexity

THE CUP

An elegant and aromatic Colombian Typica with layered fruit sweetness and delicate florals. Notes of red grape and guava bring juicy vibrancy, while violet adds a soft floral finish and refined complexity.

About this variety

Typica is often valued for a clean, elegant and sweet cup rather than heavy intensity. Floral, citrus and soft fruit notes can appear in carefully grown lots.

Why this one is different
  • Colombia
  • Antioquia
  • Washed

The reviewed Colombian Typicas are delicate and aromatic, with violet or raspberry leaf, white peach, pear, lychee and red grape, often finishing with a tea-like freshness. Washed processing keeps the profile clear, while honey processing adds softness and sweetness. A decaffeinated lot can still retain that floral, fruit-led character when handled carefully.

Washed processing can make acidity and variety character easier to read, although fermentation and drying choices still matter.

A little background

Typica is one of coffee's oldest widely travelled varieties and has a long history in Colombia. It is less productive than many modern alternatives, so today's single-variety Colombian lots are often small, high-grown selections where cup quality and producer care take priority.

Identification note This small reviewed set includes washed, honey and decaffeinated coffees. Their shared delicacy is useful context, but individual fruit notes and texture are also shaped by elevation and processing.

Classification Historic Arabica family

Technical lineage Typica belongs to the Typica-related Bourbon-Typica group and traces the historic route from Ethiopia through Yemen, India and Java before reaching the Americas.
