Intro:

September is pleased to feature Jose Martinez Colombian Caturra, a beautifully clean and balanced single‑origin coffee that captures the bright, fruity essence of Huila’s high‑altitude terroir. Rounded yet vibrant, this filter coffee blends citrus sweetness with soft floral and tea‑like depth, making every cup lively and nuanced.

The Producer:

This lot comes from José Martinez and his wife Francy Helena Inga, who manage Finca El Casino in Palestina, Huila. José grew up in a coffee farming family, left home to work throughout Colombia, and later returned to his roots to run his own farm alongside Francy for the past two decades. Together they cultivate a variety of coffees — including Caturra, Pink Bourbon, Gesha, and Tabi — and are known for their thoughtful approach and consistent quality.

The Process:

After selective hand‑picking of ripe cherries, the coffee undergoes a washed process to highlight clarity and sweetness. The cherries are rested briefly before pulping, then fermented in open tanks for about 30 hours and thoroughly washed. The beans are dried on solar driers, producing a cup that’s clean, structured, and expressive — ideal for light filter roasting.

The Cup:

In the cup, Jose Martinez Colombian Caturra has an engaging, layered profile. Expect juicy apricot 🍑 sweetness with bright grapefruit 🍊 acidity that lifts the palate, followed by a delicate black tea 🫖 note that gives a smooth, refined finish. The body is light with a round, clean finish that makes this coffee approachable yet dynamic.

Overall:

September’s Jose Martinez Colombian Caturra is a delightful expression of classic washed Colombian coffee: bright, balanced, and rich with clarity. Its combination of fruit brightness and subtle tea‑like complexity makes it a versatile and rewarding filter brew — excellent for those who appreciate lively acidity and layered flavour in every cup.

What is the roast recency?

September doesn't generally advertise a roast preference to Filter or Espresso, however, this is an exception and this particular bag is best enjoyed as espresso!

We recommend brewing with beans that are at least two weeks off roast. All beans are roasted to peak flavour at around 8-12 weeks. We have the option to either purchase standard beans (at least 2 weeks but no longer than 6 weeks off roast), or rested beans (at least 7 weeks off roast, no longer than 12). For peak flavour, if you are looking to use immediately, we recommend purchasing the rested beans. If you are adding to your rotation of beans, we recommend purchasing the standard and allowing the beans to naturally rest and mature whilst you rotate through other beans.
