Intro:

Prodigal is excited to present Shipago Geisha, a vibrant washed Geisha from the high‑altitude Utcubamba region of Peru. This lot highlights the expressive and nuanced qualities of one of coffee’s most revered varietals — offering bright fruit sweetness, juicy tropical character, and refined clarity in a filter cup that’s as compelling as it is elegant.

The Producer:

This coffee comes from Shipago, a Peruvian farm with roughly 20 hectares planted to specialty varietals including Geisha, Bourbon, Catuaí, Catimor, and Pacamara, set amid over 200 ha of natural forest. The farm’s location in the fertile Utcubamba valley provides the rich soils and ideal microclimates that support high‑quality coffee cultivation.

The Process:

Shipago Geisha is washed using a two‑stage fermentation technique. First, ripe cherries ferment whole (in‑cherry) for about 24 hours, then they are floated to remove defects, depulped, and fermented an additional ~96 hours before washing. This deliberate sequencing encourages fruit development and clarity without harsh process flavours. After washing, the coffee is dried carefully to preserve brightness and aromatic precision.

The Cup:

In the cup, Shipago Geisha is lively and expressive. Apricot 🍑 sweetness provides a juicy, approachable base, followed by tropical pineapple 🍍 that lifts the profile with bright, sunny character. Underlying berry 🍓 notes add depth and fruit complexity, making for a refreshing and layered filter coffee that’s both vibrant and balanced.

Overall:

Prodigal’s Shipago Geisha is a standout example of Peruvian washed Geisha — combining clarity, fruit intensity, and aromatic elegance in a cup that’s both accessible and memorable. With its mix of apricot, pineapple, and berry character, this coffee captures the expressive potential of its origin and varietal, delivering a delicious and distinctive filter experience.

What is the roast recency?

We recommend brewing with beans that are at least two weeks off roast. All beans are roasted to peak flavour at around 6-12 weeks. We have the option to either purchase standard beans (at least 2 weeks but no longer than 6 weeks off roast), or rested beans (at least 7 weeks off roast, no longer than 12 - should we have any left in stock!). For peak flavour, if you are looking to use immediately, we recommend purchasing the rested beans. If you are adding to your rotation of beans, we recommend purchasing the standard and allowing the beans to naturally rest and mature whilst you rotate through other beans.

What does 'Filter' or 'Espresso' Roast mean?

Typically filter is roasted lighter than espresso, though this is not always the case. Several factors play into what brands a Prodigal coffee as 'filter' or 'espresso', which includes the roast profile - i.e. how the beans are roasted, not just how developed a roast it is. It doesn't preclude you from using the beans for espresso though!
