Intro

This lot from Finca Las Veraneras is a striking example of how Ethiopian genetics can thrive far beyond their place of origin. Grown in Colombia’s Huila region, this washed Ethiopian Landrace coffee combines the clarity and structure of Colombian production with the vibrant, fruit-driven character these varieties are famous for. The result is a cup that feels both familiar and unexpected—clean, expressive, and refreshingly tropical.

The Producer

Rodrigo Sanchez is widely regarded as one of Colombia’s most innovative and thoughtful producers. At Finca Las Veraneras, Rodrigo continues his exploration of rare and non-traditional varieties, constantly pushing boundaries while maintaining an exceptional level of precision and consistency. His work with Ethiopian Landraces is a testament to his belief that variety and terroir, when carefully matched, can unlock entirely new flavor expressions. Every lot from Las Veraneras reflects meticulous attention to detail and a deep respect for the plant.

The Process

This coffee was processed using a classic washed method, designed to emphasize clarity and definition in the cup. Cherries were harvested at peak ripeness, depulped, and fermented under carefully controlled conditions before being thoroughly washed and dried. The restrained approach allows the inherent character of the Ethiopian Landrace varieties to shine, highlighting fruit clarity and brightness without overshadowing nuance.

In the Cup

The cup is bright and lively from the first sip. Juicy citrus acidity leads the way, followed by a refreshing sweetness reminiscent of watermelon. As it cools, tropical granadilla notes emerge, adding depth and a gentle exotic character. The body is clean and silky, with a crisp, refreshing finish.

What is the roast recency?

We recommend brewing with beans that are at least two weeks off roast. All beans are roasted to peak flavour at around 6-12 weeks. We have the option to either purchase standard beans (at least 2 weeks but no longer than 6 weeks off roast), or rested beans (at least 7 weeks off roast, no longer than 12 - should we have any left in stock!). For peak flavour, if you are looking to use immediately, we recommend purchasing the rested beans. If you are adding to your rotation of beans, we recommend purchasing the standard and allowing the beans to naturally rest and mature whilst you rotate through other beans.

What does 'Filter' or 'Espresso' Roast mean?

Typically filter is roasted lighter than espresso, though this is not always the case. Several factors play into what brands a Manhattan coffee as 'filter' or 'espresso', which includes the roast profile - i.e. how the beans are roasted, not just how developed a roast it is. It doesn't preclude you from using the beans for espresso though!
