INTRO The second separation of the season from Felix Morocho — a newer producer to the Ecuador project, and an extremely small lot full of love and passion, like every other coffee sourced from this region. Peach and star fruit lead, with a lemongrass lift running throughout. In the cup: peach, star fruit, and lemongrass.
THE PRODUCER Ecuadorian Mejorado has been a draw since the earliest days of sourcing from the region. This is the first year working with Felix Morocho, and this lot is his second harvest pass. Building meaningful volume from this project remains extremely challenging, even after years of experience with Ecuador and the Mejorado varietal — but the quality and profiles consistently make it worth the effort.
Mejorado is a very unique variety mainly grown in Ecuador. Though colloquially known as Typica Mejorado, genetic testing by World Coffee Research has confirmed it's actually a Bourbon variety cross-pollinated with an Ethiopian Landrace variety.
THE PROCESS The Washed process for this lot involves:
🍒 Hand-picking — cherries harvested at peak ripeness 💧 Floating — floated to further remove defects 🌙 Overnight in-cherry rest — held in-cherry overnight 🌱 De-pulping — cherries de-pulped after the rest ⏱️ Dry fermentation — fermented dry for 36 hours ☀️ Raised-bed drying — dried on raised beds until moisture reaches 10.5%
THE CUP Bright and aromatic — peach sweetness up front, star fruit tartness through the middle, and a lemongrass lift on the finish. A small but passionate showing from an emerging Ecuadorian producer.
Flavour Notes 🍑 Peach ⭐ Star Fruit 🌿 Lemongrass
