- Recognition: 2nd Place, Traditional Category, Cup of Excellence (this year)
INTRO A special coffee, and a special story — Patricio Navarro's lot secured 2nd place in the Traditional category at this year's Cup of Excellence, acquired through a friendship with fellow Honduran producer Angel Arturo Paz. Ripe apricot, green grape, and melon come through in a cup that tastes immaculately clean despite its unusual processing. In the cup: apricot, green grape, and melon.
THE PRODUCER This relationship began after purchasing Angel Arturo Paz's Honduran COE-winning "El Itacayo" the year prior. The two became fast friends, and Angel set out to find more exceptional Honduran coffees — leading directly to Patricio Navarro. Patricio submitted this lot to Cup of Excellence, and Angel sent over a sample from a small portion held separately from the COE auction. It was snapped up immediately, and in the following weeks of COE tastings, Patricio's coffee rose to secure 2nd place in the Traditional category — arriving ahead of the COE auction itself.
THE PROCESS Cherries were hand-harvested at peak ripeness, then rested in sealed bags for three days at the wet mill before pulping. The pulped coffee was held in bags for three more days, then washed thoroughly four times — though a tenacious bit of mucilage remained, earning this lot its "semi-washed" classification. Drying took 18 days on raised beds.
The double sealed-bag resting period, both before and after pulping, is the defining step — despite the unconventional processing, it's what produces this cup's immaculately clean character alongside its ripe apricot, grape, and melon sweetness.
THE CUP Ripe and clean — apricot, green grape, and melon sweetness throughout, remarkably pure despite the coffee's unconventional semi-washed processing. A competition-calibre lot secured just ahead of its own COE auction.
