Ethiopia — Prodigal "Mulu" Espresso Blend: Washed & Natural Heirloom Varieties

Tastes Like — 🍊 Orange • 🍎 Cran-Apple • 🍒 Cherry

DETAILS

  • Origin: Ethiopia (100% fresh Ethiopian coffees)
  • Varietal: Heirloom Varieties
  • Process: Washed & Natural
  • Roast Profile: Espresso (a touch darker than filter)

INTRO
Mulu Espresso is Prodigal's new seasonal blend, 100% fresh Ethiopian washed and natural coffees roasted just a touch darker for espresso. A super fun coffee combining everything loved about classic Ethiopian flavours: citrus and florals from the washed component and rich cherry flavour from the natural. Punchy and ripe, it makes great straight espresso and americanos. In the cup: orange, cran-apple, and cherry.

THE PRODUCER
This blend combines a washed and a natural Ethiopian coffee. Prodigal's blends are made exclusively from fresh headline coffees rather than the usual unchanging combinations of the same two or three coffees bought in large quantities for consistency, with components changing bit by bit to keep the flavour fresh and lively while the spirit of the blend stays the same. Well-crafted blends, they say, are better than the sum of their parts.

THE PROCESS
The blend combines washed and natural processing: the washed component contributes citrus and florals, and the natural contributes rich cherry flavour.

Pairing a washed Ethiopian with a natural one is the defining structure. It's what builds the punchy, ripe profile, with orange and cran-apple brightness from the washed lot and cherry depth from the natural.

THE CUP
Punchy and ripe: bright orange and cran-apple lead, with a rich cherry depth through the middle. Roasted for espresso, it makes great straight shots and americanos.

About this origin Ethiopia is widely recognised as coffee’s birthplace and holds extraordinary genetic diversity. Washed coffees often show jasmine, citrus and tea-like clarity, while natural lots can bring ripe berries, tropical fruit and deep aromatic sweetness.

How it works The fruit is removed from the coffee seed. Water and fermentation then help clear away the sticky layer before the seed is dried.

Typical influence Washed coffees are often described as clean and bright, with clear flavours, lively acidity and a crisp finish.

About this variety

This is a mixed or locally selected coffee population rather than one precisely identified variety. Expect the lot’s tasting notes to be more useful than a single variety stereotype.

Why this one is different
  • Ethiopia
  • Washed

In Ethiopia, local selection, replanting and farm history can shape a mixed population over many generations.

Washed processing can make acidity and variety character easier to read, although fermentation and drying choices still matter.

A little background

Several plant types may be growing and harvested together, often reflecting a farm or region’s planting history.

Classification Mixed population

Technical lineage The individual plants are not fully separated or identified, so a single genetic lineage would be misleading.

Variety is a guide, not a flavour guarantee. Lot notes are more specific.
