INTRO
This is the year of Habtamu — Ethiopia is having a banner year, and Habtamu is knocking it out of the park with this gorgeous washed lot. Big, ripe apricot leads, coupled with a touch of pineapple and jasmine-like florals. In the cup: apricot, pineapple, and jasmine.
THE PRODUCER
Habtamu Fikadu Aga is the producer and exporter of this lot, which comes from Danche in southern Ethiopia. Kuri Mountain Coffee (the company name) was founded in 2015 but started back in 1945 as a family business. Coffee cherry comes to the mill from many farms in the region, spanning hundreds of hectares.
THE PROCESS
Ripe cherry was sorted, pulped, fermented, washed, and dried on raised beds — a traditional washed process.
The straightforward, traditional washed protocol is the defining approach here — it's what lets the naturally big apricot and jasmine character shine through cleanly, without any experimental processing steps getting in the way.
THE CUP
Big and ripe — apricot sweetness leads, with a touch of pineapple and jasmine-like florals rounding out the cup.
