INTRO
A washed Pink Bourbon from Hacienda El Obraje in Tangua, Nariño, home of the 2021 Colombia Cup of Excellence winner. In the cup: brown sugar, black tea, honey, and tropical fruit.
THE PRODUCER
Hacienda El Obraje sits on the slope of a dormant volcano in the far south of Nariño. Pablo Andrés Guerrero, an architect from Pasto, planted coffee on land his family once farmed for wheat. Of nearly 90 hectares he keeps only around 35 in coffee and has turned the rest into forest reserve. In 2021 his washed Geisha won the Colombia Cup of Excellence with 90.61 points. Days reach 32°C at noon and nights fall to 8°C or lower, building a dense bean and the clean, layered acidity the farm is known for.
Pink Bourbon was long assumed to be a Red × Yellow Bourbon cross. Genetic testing (DNA Analytica in 2017, RD2 Vision in 2023) showed instead that it lines up with wild Ethiopian coffee, not with Bourbon or Geisha. In a good lot it gives white flowers, red fruit, and citrus with a juice-like sweetness, closer to a fine washed Ethiopian than to a round, chocolatey Bourbon.
THE PROCESS
The cherries rest 40 hours in open bags before being floated, sorted, and pulped. The wet parchment then ferments 36 hours in dry sealed tanks, is washed in clean water, and dries for 18 days in a parabolic greenhouse.
The 40-hour open-bag rest followed by a 36-hour dry sealed-tank ferment is the defining combination. It builds the sweetness and clean, layered structure behind the cup.
THE CUP
Sweet and layered: brown sugar and black tea lead, with honey and tropical fruit through the finish.
