INTRO From the Wate Village Gogogu station in Uraga, Guji — one of the region's most remote, highest-altitude growing areas, and the No.1 producing area for washed coffee in the 2025 TOH Africa Group. This G1 washed lot bridges Guji's bright citrus and stone fruit character with the rose-like floral sweetness more often associated with Yirgacheffe. In the cup: white floral nectar, green grape, bergamot, and Dancong tea.
THE PRODUCER Though Yirgacheffe and Guji both fall under Ethiopia's broader Sidamo coffee zone, Guji carries a distinctly different regional flavour profile. This lot comes from the Wate Village Gogogu station, run by Nigusse Debela and built in 2020 above 2,100 masl. The station serves roughly 510 smallholder farmers across a jurisdiction reaching up to 2,400 masl — among the most remote and highest-altitude areas in the broader Guji zone.
THE PROCESS The Washed process here involves:
🍒 Hand-picking — ripe cherries selectively picked 🌱 De-pulping — cherries de-pulped shortly after harvest ⏱️ Extended tank fermentation — fermented in washing tanks for 60 hours ☀️ Raised-bed drying — sun-dried on African drying beds for 17–20 days 📦 Storage & milling — stored in warehouses, then hulled and graded only prior to export
The 60-hour tank fermentation is the defining step — a notably long window that builds structure and complexity, giving this cup its blend of bright Guji citrus and stone fruit alongside a rose-like floral sweetness more typical of Yirgacheffe.
THE CUP Bright and layered — white floral nectar and bergamot lift up front, green grape running through the middle, and a Dancong tea-like finish. A distinctive showcase of what this remote, high-altitude corner of Guji can produce.
