Colombia — Café Granja La Esperanza La Esperanza Mandela (Natural)

Tastes Like — 🍈 Sapodilla • 🍫 Cacao Nibs • 🍇 Green Grape

DETAILS

  • Producer: Café Granja La Esperanza
  • Farm: La Esperanza
  • Region: Trujillo, Valle del Cauca, Colombia
  • Varietal: Mandela
  • Process: Natural
  • Altitude: 1,450–1,627 masl

INTRO From Café Granja La Esperanza's La Esperanza farm in Trujillo, Valle del Cauca — a bold, tropical natural showcasing the estate's visionary hybridisation work. Sapodilla sweetness and cacao nib depth sit alongside a green grape brightness, shaped by the farm's unique microclimate. In the cup: sapodilla, cacao nibs, and green grape.

THE PRODUCER Café Granja La Esperanza began in 1945 with Potosí farm in Valle del Cauca, originally focused on Yellow Bourbon, Red Bourbon, and Caturra. Driven by a sustainable development orientation and a willingness to innovate, the operation has expanded into organic specialty coffee across successive farms, including La Esperanza — where varietal experimentation like Mandela reflects the estate's ongoing commitment to pushing what Colombian coffee can be.

THE PROCESS This lot is processed as a Natural — cherries are dried whole, allowing the fruit to impart its character directly into the bean. Paired with La Esperanza's warm, humid microclimate, this approach builds the bold, tropical sapodilla and cacao nib depth that define this cup.

THE CUP Bold and tropical — sapodilla sweetness up front, cacao nib depth through the middle, and a green grape brightness on the finish. A striking result of hybridisation and meticulous natural processing at La Esperanza.

Coffee Variety

In this coffee

Bright, crisp acidity balanced by a velvety cacao sweetness.

  • Sapodilla
  • Cacao Nibs
  • Green Grape

About this variety

Mandela is often presented in fruit-rich, highly controlled lots with layered sweetness and a creamy structure. The reviewed natural coffee combines juicy cherry with caramel and milk chocolate, while other CGLE examples move towards dark berries, plum, citrus or liqueur-like fruit. Processing remains a major part of each expression.

Why this one is different
  • Colombia
  • Cauca
  • 1450-1627 masl
  • Natural

At Finca Potosí in Colombia, natural processing gives this Mandela a rounded, indulgent profile of cherry, caramel and milk chocolate. Other CGLE natural lots show dark berries, plum, citrus and a creamy body, so concentrated fruit and layered sweetness are useful context while the exact process explains the final direction.

Natural processing often brings a rounder, fruit-led expression, which can make the same variety feel quite different from a washed lot.

A little background

Mandela was developed within Café Granja La Esperanza and remains closely associated with its farms in Valle del Cauca. This lot comes from Finca Potosí and uses controlled whole-cherry fermentation followed by natural drying.

Identification note This context applies to traceable Mandela from Café Granja La Esperanza. It should not be detached from CGLE provenance or presented as a general Colombian cultivar with an independently published pedigree.

Classification Proprietary Colombian multi-stage cultivar

Technical lineage Proprietary CGLE cultivar with a reported multi-stage pedigree; exact breeding detail remains qualified.
