INTRO
From Basha Bekele, a young specialty producer from Bensa in Sidama, whose natural-processed coffee won the 2024 Ethiopia Cup of Excellence. A natural process that enhances fruity sweetness, floral character, and complexity. Raspberry leads, with rose florals and grape. In the cup: raspberry, rose, and grape.
THE PRODUCER
Basha Bekele comes from a family with a long tradition of coffee farming and has developed his own plots and processing stations across areas such as Gonjobe, Kokose, Murago, and Badagalo. His work focuses on careful cherry selection, processing, and drying, producing coffees known for sweetness, clarity, and a distinctive fruity and floral character. In 2024 he gained international recognition by winning the Ethiopia Cup of Excellence with a natural-processed coffee that scored 90.50 points. He represents a new generation of Ethiopian producers investing in quality, greater control over processing, and more value and recognition for their coffees and local communities.
THE PROCESS
The cherries are hand-selected at peak ripeness and placed on raised African drying beds. The whole cherries dry slowly for around 30–35 days, with regular turning for an even, controlled drying. Once the desired moisture level is reached, the dried fruit is removed during dry milling.
The slow 30–35 day whole-cherry drying is the defining step. It enhances the fruity sweetness, floral character, and complexity behind the raspberry and rose notes.
THE CUP
Fruity and floral: raspberry sweetness leads, with rose florality through the middle and a grape finish.
