INTRO

Velvet Berry — a naturally processed Chiroso from Jairo Arcila at 1,800–2,000 MASL. Lush, creamy, and berry-forward, with the silky texture and rich sweetness that make great Colombian natural Chiroso so compelling. In the cup: raspberry, cream, vanilla, and boysenberry.

THE PRODUCER

Jairo Arcila is one of Colombia's most celebrated and widely referenced specialty coffee producers — a name synonymous with quality, innovation, and the kind of meticulous processing that consistently produces exceptional results across a wide range of styles and varietals. This natural Chiroso at 1,800–2,000 MASL represents the higher-altitude, more delicate side of his portfolio — where the cooler temperatures and slower cherry development of the upper growing range build the concentrated berry sweetness and creamy vanilla depth that define Velvet Berry.

Chiroso is a variety grown primarily in Antioquia, genetically identified as Ethiopian Landrace. At 1,800–2,000 MASL under natural processing, its inherent vivid fruit character and floral expressiveness are amplified by the fruit's own sugars — producing the lush raspberry and boysenberry sweetness and cream-like texture that make this lot such an immediately appealing and deeply satisfying filter coffee.

THE PROCESS

The Natural process involves:

🍒 Hand-picking — Chiroso cherries selectively harvested at peak ripeness 🔍 Sorting — Carefully sorted before drying to ensure only the finest ripe cherries proceed ☀️ Raised-bed drying — Whole cherries dried on raised beds, allowing natural sugars and aromatic compounds to integrate fully into the bean throughout the drying period

The whole-fruit natural drying is the defining step — by leaving the cherry intact throughout, the process amplifies the Chiroso's inherent raspberry and boysenberry character with the fruit's own sugars, building the cream-like texture and vanilla sweetness that give this lot its distinctively velvet character.

THE CUP

A lush, creamy, and beautifully berry-forward natural Chiroso from one of Colombia's most celebrated producers — raspberry and boysenberry fruit richness, a cream-like texture, and a warm vanilla sweetness in a silky, indulgent filter cup. Velvet Berry: every bit as luxurious as the name suggests.

About this variety

Coffees reported as Chiroso are often associated with an aromatic, tea-like and bright cup. Florals, citrus and stone fruit are useful reference points in carefully produced lots.

Why this one is different
  • Colombia
  • Antioquia
  • 1800-2000 masl
  • Natural

Colombian Chiroso is often bright and aromatic, bringing white flowers, citrus, red fruit and a tea-like or gently herbal finish. The reviewed washed lots from high elevations are especially clear and lively, while natural processing can make the fruit rounder and more expressive. Look to the listed process for the clearest clue to this bag.

Natural processing often brings a rounder, fruit-led expression, which can make the same variety feel quite different from a washed lot.

A little background

Chiroso gained attention through producers around Urrao in Antioquia and is now seen in other Colombian regions. The reviewed coffees still lean strongly towards high-grown, carefully washed lots, where florals and vivid fruit stay sharply defined.

Identification note Chiroso is a Colombian producer name with strong genetic evidence linking tested material to Ethiopian landraces. Individual farm plantings are not assumed to be genetically identical unless their traceability confirms it.

Classification Colombian regional name

Technical lineage Published genetic research places tested Chiroso in an Ethiopian-only landrace cluster, rather than supporting the older idea that it was simply a Caturra mutation.

Variety is a guide, not a flavour guarantee. Lot notes are more specific.
