INTRO
This AA separation comes from Kamunyaka, a washing station within the Iria-Ini cooperative in Kenya's central highlands, part of a broader effort to revitalise its stations through careful processing, experimentation, and a renewed focus on cup quality. Grapefruit and brown sugar lead, with kumquat and a mulling spice finish. In the cup: grapefruit, brown sugar, kumquat, and mulling spice.
THE PRODUCER
Kamunyaka serves smallholder producers farming across the highlands of central Kenya, with much of the surrounding coffee grown at 1,700–1,800 meters. Most producers farm on a small scale, delivering between 200 and 1,200 kilograms of cherry during a harvest that typically runs November through December. The station receives roughly 1.5 million kilograms of cherry a season. In recent years the cooperative has focused on revitalising its washing stations, improving processing, and building a stronger culture around quality. Its chairman, after returning home to invest in his community and helping revive the Miiri station, describes his relationship with coffee simply: "Coffee is religion. It is my passion." Iria-Ini is also working toward its own cupping facility to evaluate coffees at origin.
THE PROCESS
This lot is Dry Washed: depulped and fermented dry for twenty-four hours, followed by channel washing, then dried for approximately fifteen days on raised beds. The processing impact in the cup is light, with few signs of fermentation.
The 24-hour dry fermentation is the defining step. It keeps the cup clean and bright, letting the grapefruit and kumquat character come through with brown sugar sweetness underneath.
THE CUP
Bright and spiced: grapefruit and kumquat lead, with brown sugar sweetness through the middle and a warm mulling spice finish.
