INTRO
Rumudamo is one of Sidama's most celebrated washing stations, perched at an exceptional altitude in the highlands of Arbegona — among the highest coffee-growing elevations in Ethiopia. This Washed 74112 is a pristine expression of the terroir: lychee and creamy guava lead, followed by crystal grape and the delicate, lingering finish of oolong tea.
THE PRODUCER
Rumudamo is a small but highly regarded coffee-producing village in the Arbegona district of Sidama, southern Ethiopia. At 2,200–2,400 MASL, it sits above most coffee-growing regions in the country — an altitude that slows cherry maturation considerably, concentrating sugars and building the layered complexity for which Sidama's finest lots are known.
The name Rumudamo itself carries a dual meaning — "fertile land" and "abundant roots" — a fitting reflection of the region's rich volcanic soils and deep agricultural heritage. Farmers cultivate a diverse array of crops alongside coffee, including sugarcane, enset, spices, and vegetables, though coffee remains the primary livelihood for the surrounding communities. The station's reputation is well-established on the international stage: lots from Rumudamo placed 2nd, 3rd, and 8th at the 2020 Ethiopia Cup of Excellence, underscoring the consistency and quality of what this high-altitude village is capable of producing.
THE PROCESS
The Washed process at Rumudamo involves:
🍒 Hand-picking — Freshly harvested cherries delivered to the washing station at peak ripeness 💧 Floatation sorting — Cherries immersed in water to identify and remove defects before processing begins 🧪 Underwater fermentation — Cherries fermented in water for approximately 72 hours under controlled conditions to break down the mucilage 💧 Full washing & de-pulping — Beans thoroughly washed and pulped following fermentation ☀️ Raised-bed drying — Dried on African raised beds over approximately 9 days, with shade applied during peak heat to protect bean integrity and prevent cracking
The defining step is the extended 72-hour underwater fermentation — a carefully controlled process that cleanly strips the mucilage while preserving the delicate floral and fruit characteristics that make high-altitude Sidama coffees so distinctive.
THE CUP
A beautifully composed Washed Ethiopian from one of Sidama's most decorated stations — Rumudamo's 74112 reflects the extraordinary conditions of Arbegona's highland terroir with clarity and elegance. The result is a refined and aromatic cup: soft tropical fruits and cool-climate grape give way to the quiet complexity of oolong, making this a coffee that rewards slow, attentive brewing.
