Colombia — Rigoberto Herrera Café Granja La Esperanza Geisha (Classic Washed)

Tastes Like — 🍋 Lemon • 🌸 Jasmine • 🍈 Passionfruit

DETAILS

  • Producer: Rigoberto Herrera, Café Granja La Esperanza (CGLE)
  • Farm: La Esperanza
  • Region: Valle del Cauca, Colombia
  • Varietal: Geisha
  • Process: Classic Washed
  • Elevation: 1,760 masl

INTRO
CGLE's return to Geisha after a two-year absence — while globally renowned for innovative, process-heavy coffees, this exceptionally clean, fully washed lot from La Esperanza is a different kind of showcase. High-grown Geishas typically lean toward heavy, intense florals like lavender, but this lot delivers a wonderfully clean, dazzlingly vibrant jasmine profile — a rare, refreshed expression recalling the bright Volcán Geishas of Panama a few years back. In the cup: lemon, (very) jasmine, and passionfruit.

THE PRODUCER
Café Granja La Esperanza's La Esperanza farm sits in Valle del Cauca, part of the same operation behind Las Margaritas and Potosí seen elsewhere on the menu. This lot, from producer Rigoberto Herrera, was singled out for the exceptionally clean, terroir-driven character of its washed processing — a standout even within CGLE's celebrated portfolio.

THE PROCESS
This lot is Classic Washed, a method that removes the fruit before fermentation and drying — allowing Geisha's naturally floral character to come through with pristine clarity, driven by an exceptionally high intensity of jasmine that carries through the entire cup.

THE CUP
Driven by an exceptionally high intensity of jasmine — "very jasmine" — bright notes of fresh lemon lead into a beautifully perfumed, passionfruit-like sweetness that lingers endlessly on the palate. A brilliant showcase of pristine processing, structural balance, and pure genetic potential.

About this variety

Coffees reported as Gesha or Geisha are often prized for a delicate, tea-like cup with lifted floral aromas and bright fruit. Jasmine, bergamot and peach are common reference points, but each lot can express them differently.

Why this one is different
  • Colombia
  • Cauca
  • 1760 masl
  • Washed

This is a Colombian expression, so it should not be expected to match a Panamanian Geisha exactly. The farm, growing conditions and lot notes matter more than the spelling.

Washed processing can make acidity and variety character easier to read, although fermentation and drying choices still matter.

Why the Gesha / Geisha name matters

Gesha and Geisha are interchangeable spellings, not proof of different varieties. The best-documented Panamanian Geisha and a Colombian research sample have matched T2722, but country and spelling do not prove that every farm planting is identical.

Classification Reported Gesha / Geisha

Technical lineage The reported name alone does not establish one genetic lineage. Confirmed Panamanian T2722 traces to Ethiopian landrace material.

Variety is a guide, not a flavour guarantee. Lot notes are more specific.
