Intro:

Prodigal is delighted to feature Las Perlitas Chiroso — Colombia, Washed, a standout coffee that celebrates collaboration and quality from Colombia’s specialty coffee heartland. Crafted from a pure Chiroso varietal lot sourced through the Las Perlitas programme — meaning “Little Pearls” — this coffee showcases bright, juicy flavours and elegant clarity. It’s an exciting addition to Prodigal’s light‑roast filter lineup and a true testament to how smallholder coffees can shine.

The Producer:

The Las Perlitas programme brings together exceptional micro‑lots from smallholder farmers across regions like Huila, Antioquia, and Urrao who often produce coffee in volumes too small for export individually. Working with partners such as Coffee Quest, these tiny high‑quality lots are evaluated and combined based on strict cup standards, ensuring every bag contributes to a coffee of remarkable consistency and character. The name Las Perlitas — “Little Pearls” — reflects both the small size of these contributions and the collective quality they achieve together.

The Process:

This lot is washed processed. Cherries are carefully picked at peak ripeness, fermented to remove remaining mucilage, then thoroughly washed and dried. The result is a clean, bright profile with a juicy expression that allows varietal and terroir notes to shine without overt fermentation influence.

The Cup:

In the cup, Las Perlitas Chiroso offers an inviting, juicy profile 🧃 with vibrant highlights. Expect bright orange 🍊 sweetness upfront, deepening into rich raisin 🍇 tones that add a pleasant, wine‑like density. The overall expression is lively and approachable, yet nuanced — perfectly suited for filter brews that emphasize clarity and complexity.

Overall:

Prodigal’s Las Perlitas Chiroso — Colombia, Washed is a beautiful celebration of what happens when smallholder dedication meets thoughtful sourcing and processing. With its bright fruit notes, juicy body, and elegant balance, it stands as a compelling example of Colombian specialty coffee at its best. Whether you’re exploring Chiroso for the first time or seeking a lively everyday filter, this coffee offers both approachability and depth in every cup.

What is the roast recency?

We recommend brewing with beans that are at least two weeks off roast. All beans are roasted to peak flavour at around 6-12 weeks. We have the option to either purchase standard beans (at least 2 weeks but no longer than 6 weeks off roast), or rested beans (at least 7 weeks off roast, no longer than 12 - should we have any left in stock!). For peak flavour, if you are looking to use immediately, we recommend purchasing the rested beans. If you are adding to your rotation of beans, we recommend purchasing the standard and allowing the beans to naturally rest and mature whilst you rotate through other beans.

What does 'Filter' or 'Espresso' Roast mean?

Typically filter is roasted lighter than espresso, though this is not always the case. Several factors play into what brands a Prodigal coffee as 'filter' or 'espresso', which includes the roast profile - i.e. how the beans are roasted, not just how developed a roast it is. It doesn't preclude you from using the beans for espresso though!
