Intro

This Gesha natural from Hacienda La Esmeralda is a rare and vibrant coffee that tells a unique story. A “happy accident” occurred when two exceptional lots—the Jaramillo Manantial 5NC and the Cañas Verdes Montaña 5BANC—were blended during overnight processing. The result is a harmonious and expressive coffee that highlights the best characteristics of both sites.

The Producer

The Peterson Family manages Hacienda La Esmeralda with a dedication to quality and innovation. Known worldwide for producing some of Panama’s most celebrated Gesha coffees, their careful attention to cultivation, harvest, and processing ensures that every lot reflects the full potential of the varietal and the region.

The Process

Originally processed separately as naturals, both lots were dried slowly in a climate-controlled environment at low, stable temperatures. The Manantial portion comes from the highest section of Jaramillo farm at 1,900 MASL, while the Montaña portion is from the Cañas Verdes plot at 1,800 MASL on the slopes of Volcán Barú. This meticulous process preserves fruit intensity, floral notes, and a clean, layered structure.

In the Cup

The cup opens with juicy raspberry sweetness, followed by notes of strawberry candy and delicate purple floral aromas. The finish is smooth and vibrant, leaving a lasting impression of clarity, balance, and playful complexity—a true showcase of Panama Gesha excellence.

What is the roast recency?

We recommend brewing with beans that are at least two weeks off roast. All beans are roasted to peak flavour at around 6-12 weeks. We have the option to either purchase standard beans (at least 2 weeks but no longer than 6 weeks off roast), or rested beans (at least 7 weeks off roast, no longer than 12 - should we have any left in stock!). For peak flavour, if you are looking to use immediately, we recommend purchasing the rested beans. If you are adding to your rotation of beans, we recommend purchasing the standard and allowing the beans to naturally rest and mature whilst you rotate through other beans.

What does 'Filter' or 'Espresso' Roast mean?

Typically filter is roasted lighter than espresso, though this is not always the case. Several factors play into what brands a Manhattan coffee as 'filter' or 'espresso', which includes the roast profile - i.e. how the beans are roasted, not just how developed a roast it is. It doesn't preclude you from using the beans for espresso though!
