INTRO
Arbegona holds a very special place at SEY, and each year they look forward to fall, when they finally get to release these high-elevation lots from this remarkable region. In the cup: watermelon, a lovely florality, and berries.

THE PRODUCER
This site from Arbegona has become one of SEY's main projects in the region and consistently produces some of their highest-scoring lots of the year. They plan to travel back to Ethiopia later this year to visit Yaye and Arbegona, continuing to build on the work that has begun. These coffees yield some of the most articulate profiles they taste each year.

Ethiopia is widely acknowledged as where coffee originated, with DNA testing confirming over 60 distinct varieties, the most coffee biodiversity of any region in the world. Single-variety lots are virtually impossible to source, so most Ethiopian coffees are blends of many varieties and are referred to simply as "Ethiopian Landrace."

THE PROCESS
The Washed process for this lot involves:

🍒 Hand-picking — cherries harvested at peak ripeness
💧 Floating — floated to further remove defects
⚙️ De-pulping and density grading — de-pulped, then Grade 1 density separated
🏺 Underwater fermentation — fermented underwater for 36 hours
☀️ Raised-bed drying — dried on raised beds for 10–14 days

THE CUP
Articulate and floral: watermelon leads, with a lovely florality and berries running through.

How it works The fruit is removed from the coffee seed. Water and fermentation then help clear away the sticky layer before the seed is dried.

Typical influence Washed coffees are often described as clean and bright, with clear flavours, lively acidity and a crisp finish.

About this variety

This is a mixed or locally selected coffee population rather than one precisely identified variety. Expect the lot’s tasting notes to be more useful than a single variety stereotype.

Why this one is different
  • Ethiopia
  • Sidama
  • 2300 masl
  • Washed

In Ethiopia, local selection, replanting and farm history can shape a mixed population over many generations.

Washed processing can make acidity and variety character easier to read, although fermentation and drying choices still matter.

A little background

Several plant types may be growing and harvested together, often reflecting a farm or region’s planting history.

Classification Mixed population

Technical lineage The individual plants are not fully separated or identified, so a single genetic lineage would be misleading.

Variety is a guide, not a flavour guarantee. Lot notes are more specific.
