INTRO Badigalo is Basha Bekele's new, higher-elevation site — and this is SEY's first year working with it, with quality already proving exceptional. Kiwi and guava sweetness lead, with an orange blossom florality running throughout. In the cup: kiwi, orange blossom, and guava.

THE PRODUCER Basha Bekele is an exceptional producer in Bensa who took first place at the Cup of Excellence in 2024. This is the first year tasting coffee from his new site, Badigalo, and the results have been outstanding — continuing a multi-year focus on Bensa, a region that keeps producing some of the highest-scoring coffees in the buying programme.

74158 is a JARC selection — one of around 40 varieties developed by the Jimma Agricultural Research Center, one of Ethiopia's federal agricultural research bodies. Approved for release in 1979, it originated from the Metu Bishari Selections, taken from mother plants in the Metu woreda of the Illubabor zone, and was propagated for its high yield potential and resistance to coffee berry disease.

THE PROCESS Cherries are hand-picked at peak ripeness and floated to remove defects, then de-pulped as quickly as possible, intentionally leaving a small amount of mucilage on the bean. The coffee dries on shaded beds with that mucilage intact for three days, until reaching around 10% moisture.

The quick de-pulping with mucilage intentionally retained is the defining step — that light honey-style contact is what builds the kiwi and guava sweetness while preserving the variety's natural orange blossom florality.

THE CUP Bright and exceptional — kiwi and guava sweetness up front, with an orange blossom florality lifting throughout. A striking debut for Badigalo as a site to watch.
