INTRO
From the Monobamba Valley in the province of Jauja — a fascinatingly named place that translates from Quechua as "Plain of Desire", where the high jungle of the Amazon meets the Andes at the "Ceja de Selva". A field blend washed filter roast from Dula Julcarima and her family and neighbours, offering balance, sweetness, and juiciness in equal measure. In the cup: walnuts, dates, and yellow plum, with a soft acidity and a slightly unctuous body.
THE PRODUCER
The Monobamba ecosystem sits in a unique transitional zone between the Amazon jungle and the Andes — most farms located between 1,800 and 2,000 MASL, with some plots reaching 2,200 metres, making this one of central Peru's most extraordinary growing environments. Like many communities in the region, the producers here spent years rebuilding after a period of difficulty, replanting and reinvesting in their farms with a new vision focused on quality over volume. In recent harvests, the results have been increasingly impressive.
At the heart of this lot is Dula Julcarima — one of the first Q-Graders in Peru, having qualified in 2010. She comes from the Monobamba region and joined the Cultivar team as quality coordinator at their Peru Centre, bringing both technical expertise and deep local knowledge to the project. Together with her family and neighbours, she is experimenting with extended fermentation, producing some of the sweetest and cleanest coffees the Cultivar team have encountered.
THE PROCESS
The Washed process in Monobamba involves:
🍒 Hand-picking — Ripe cherries selectively harvested across the Churupallana producers 🔧 Depulping — Outer skin removed before fermentation 🧪 Cement tank fermentation — Beans fermented in cement tanks for an average of 18 hours 💧 Washing — Thoroughly washed with clean water after fermentation ☀️ Raised-bed drying — Dried on African raised beds to optimal moisture content
The 18-hour cement tank fermentation is the defining step — a controlled, clean fermentation that develops the walnut richness, date sweetness, and yellow plum character that define this lot, while the raised-bed drying preserves the balance and juiciness that run through from first sip to last.
THE CUP
A balanced, sweet, and juicy washed field blend from one of central Peru's most compelling and unique growing ecosystems — walnut depth, date richness, and yellow plum brightness in a soft, clean, and slightly unctuous cup. The "Plain of Desire" in every sense.
