Intro:
Mazelab is delighted to present Mukurweini Washed, a striking filter coffee from Kenya’s Nyeri region that combines clarity, vibrant fruit character, and a luscious mouthfeel. This washed SL28 lot offers the expressive acidity and juicy finesse that Kenyan coffees are renowned for — a coffee that stands out for both structure and sweetness.
The Producer:
This lot is sourced from Thunguri Coffee, a producer in Nyeri County, situated on Kenya’s fertile central highlands. This region’s volcanic soils, steady rainfall, and high altitude allow coffee cherries to mature slowly, enhancing their sugar development and fruit complexity. Working within a well‑established cooperative system, Thunguri ensures ripe cherries are hand‑selected and processed promptly, supporting both quality and consistency.
The Process:
Mukurweini Washed undergoes a classic washed process, where freshly picked cherries are depulped and fermented to remove mucilage before being thoroughly washed with clean water. This method accentuates clarity, acidity, and varietal expression, allowing the nuanced fruit characteristics of SL28 to shine. Careful drying follows, preserving bright aromatics and a refined profile that’s perfect for filter brewing.
The Cup:
In the cup, this coffee is dynamic and juicy. Bold cranberry 🍒 notes jump out first, followed by bright raspberry 🍓 sweetness that adds depth and energy. A juicy, velvety body 🍑 carries the fruitiness through the sip, creating a balanced and lingering finish that feels both fresh and complete. The overall experience marries vibrant acidity with smooth fruit sweetness, making it a compelling and memorable filter coffee.
Overall:
Mazelab’s Mukurweini Washed is a standout Kenyan coffee — bright, fruity, and beautifully balanced. Its combination of vivid berry notes and a rounded, velvety mouthfeel makes it a joy to explore, especially in pour‑over or other clean extraction methods. If you’re after a filter coffee that exemplifies the best of Kenyan SL28, this lot delivers both clarity and depth with every sip.
What is the roast recency?
Mazelab doesn't advertise a roast preference to Filter or Espresso, instead they are roasted for the best amongst both - often called Omniroast. That being said, Mazelab typically roast towards a developed medium-light.
We recommend brewing with beans that are at least two weeks off roast. All beans are roasted to peak flavour at around 8-12 weeks. We have the option to either purchase standard beans (at least 2 weeks but no longer than 6 weeks off roast), or rested beans (at least 7 weeks off roast, no longer than 12). For peak flavour, if you are looking to use immediately, we recommend purchasing the rested beans. If you are adding to your rotation of beans, we recommend purchasing the standard and allowing the beans to naturally rest and mature whilst you rotate through other beans.
