Ecuador — Juan Peña Hacienda La Papaya Gesha (Washed)

Tastes Like — 🥝 Kiwi • 🍋 Lemon Custard • 🌹 Rose

DETAILS

  • Producer: Juan Peña
  • Farm: Hacienda La Papaya
  • Region: Saraguro, Ecuador
  • Varietal: Gesha
  • Process: Washed
  • Sourcing: CafExporto

INTRO A beautifully tropical, highly floral Gesha harvest from Juan Peña at Hacienda La Papaya — more complexity this year than in recent seasons, with tart tropical and citrus fruit and a pungent florality throughout. Kiwi and lemon custard sweetness lead, with rose aromatics running through. In the cup: kiwi, lemon custard, and rose.

THE PRODUCER This lot comes from Juan Peña's Hacienda La Papaya in Saraguro, Ecuador, sourced through exporting partner CafExporto.

THE PROCESS This lot is Washed, a method that removes the fruit before fermentation and drying — letting Gesha's naturally floral, tropical character come through with clarity, building the kiwi, lemon custard, and rose notes that define this cup.

THE CUP Tropical and highly floral — kiwi and tart citrus lead, with a uniquely creamy lemon custard sweetness and a heavily floral, rose-driven finish. A dynamic, transformative cup that shifts noticeably as it cools.

Coffee Variety

About this variety

Coffees reported as Gesha or Geisha are often prized for a delicate, tea-like cup with lifted floral aromas and bright fruit. Jasmine, bergamot and peach are common reference points, but each lot can express them differently.

Why this one is different
  • Ecuador
  • Saraguro
  • Washed

In Ecuador, the variety is an introduced planting whose expression depends heavily on the farm, altitude and processing. The lot’s own tasting notes should lead.

Washed processing can make acidity and variety character easier to read, although fermentation and drying choices still matter.

Why the Gesha / Geisha name matters

Gesha and Geisha are interchangeable spellings, not proof of different varieties. The best-documented Panamanian Geisha descends from Ethiopian material recorded as T2722, while other coffees carrying either spelling may not be genetically identical.

Classification Reported Gesha / Geisha

Technical lineage The reported name alone does not establish one genetic lineage. Confirmed Panamanian T2722 traces to Ethiopian landrace material.

Variety is a guide, not a flavour guarantee. Lot notes are more specific.
