INTRO
A washed Geisha from the farm behind the 2021 Colombia Cup of Excellence winner. In the cup: mandarin and orange, florals, and a clean sugarcane sweetness.

THE PRODUCER
Hacienda El Obraje sits on the slope of a dormant volcano in Tangua, in the far south of Nariño. For generations the Guerrero family grew wheat here; when cheap imports made grain unviable, Pablo Andrés Guerrero, an architect from Pasto, bet the land on coffee and was one of the first in the area to plant it. Of nearly 90 hectares he keeps only about 35 in coffee and has turned the rest into a natural forest reserve, planting trees to protect the farm's microclimate. Days reach 32°C at noon and nights fall to 8°C or lower, a swing that builds dense beans and a clean, layered acidity. In 2021 his washed Geisha won the Colombia Cup of Excellence with 90.61 points, and his lots are still chosen by competitors around the world. Mazelab first roasted El Obraje in 2023 and keeps coming back.

THE PROCESS
The cherries are picked by hand and rest 40 hours in open bags before being floated, sorted, and pulped. The wet parchment then ferments 36 hours in dry sealed tanks, is washed in clean water, and dries for 18 days in a parabolic greenhouse.

The 40-hour open-bag rest followed by a 36-hour dry sealed-tank ferment is the defining combination. It builds the clean, layered citrus acidity and sugarcane sweetness behind this cup.

THE CUP
Clean and layered: mandarin and orange lead, with florals and a clean sugarcane sweetness.

About this variety

Coffees reported as Gesha or Geisha are often prized for a delicate, tea-like cup with lifted floral aromas and bright fruit. Jasmine, bergamot and peach are common reference points, but each lot can express them differently.

Why this one is different
  • Colombia
  • Nariño
  • 2000-2300 masl
  • Washed

This is a Colombian expression, so it should not be expected to match a Panamanian Geisha exactly. The farm, growing conditions and lot notes matter more than the spelling.

Washed processing can make acidity and variety character easier to read, although fermentation and drying choices still matter.

Why the Gesha / Geisha name matters

Gesha and Geisha are interchangeable spellings, not proof of different varieties. The best-documented Panamanian Geisha and a Colombian research sample have matched T2722, but country and spelling do not prove that every farm planting is identical.

Classification Reported Gesha / Geisha

Technical lineage The reported name alone does not establish one genetic lineage. Confirmed Panamanian T2722 traces to Ethiopian landrace material.

Variety is a guide, not a flavour guarantee. Lot notes are more specific.
