The Story Behind the Cup
Reaching Bumba Hill is no easy feat – three rivers and two provincial borders stand in the way. Life here is remote, with limited access to clean water and electricity, yet the community thrives with resilience and purpose.
Coffee is the lifeblood of Bumba, grown alongside corn and beans. At its heart lies a small, lively market where locals trade fresh produce and daily essentials. A single primary school stands tall as a symbol of hope for future generations.
For years, farmers endured a three-hour walk to deliver cherries to Bukeye Washing Station or the nearest Long Miles collection point. Now, things are changing. Long Miles has secured land near Bumba Hill, building African-style raised drying tables and creating a new Ninga Washing Station delivery site.
This means farmers can now deliver their harvests with ease, walking or cycling short distances rather than trekking for hours.
At Ninga, coffee undergoes meticulous natural processing. Cherries are floated, hand-sorted, and dried on raised tables for 25–30 days until they reach the perfect 10.5% moisture content. Over time, their bright red hue deepens to a prune-like purple-black – the mark of exceptional quality.
This new infrastructure is more than just a convenience. It’s a game-changer for the farmers of Bumba, paving the way for a sustainable future.
What is the roast recency?
We recommend brewing with beans that are at least two weeks off roast. All beans are roasted to peak flavour at around 8-12 weeks. We have the option to either purchase standard beans (at least 2 weeks but no longer than 6 weeks off roast), or rested beans (at least 7 weeks off roast, no longer than 12). For peak flavour, if you are looking to use immediately, we recommend purchasing the rested beans. If you are adding to your rotation of beans, we recommend purchasing the standard and allowing the beans to naturally rest and mature whilst you rotate through other beans.
