Roaster notes

Ethiopia — Habtamu Fikadu Aga Danche Heirloom, Espresso Roast (Washed)

Tastes Like — 🍑 Apricot • 🍍 Pineapple • 🌸 Jasmine

DETAILS

  • Producer: Habtamu Fikadu Aga (Kuri Mountain Coffee)
  • Station: Danche
  • Region: Yirgacheffe, Ethiopia
  • Varietal: Heirloom
  • Process: Washed
  • Roast Profile: Espresso (a touch darker than the filter version)

INTRO
Roasted just a touch darker than the filter version, this espresso roast makes fantastic straight shots and Americanos. Ethiopia is having a banner year, and Habtamu is knocking it out of the park with a big, ripe apricot coupled with a touch of pineapple and jasmine-like florals. It was first roasted for monthly subscribers in July and is now available to everyone. In the cup: apricot, pineapple, and jasmine.

THE PRODUCER
Habtamu Fikadu Aga is the producer and exporter of this lot, which comes from Danche in southern Ethiopia. Kuri Mountain Coffee was founded in 2015 and started back in 1945 as a family business. Coffee cherry comes to the mill from many farms in the region, spanning hundreds of hectares.

THE PROCESS
The ripe cherry was sorted, pulped, fermented, washed, and dried on raised beds. This is traditional washed coffee.

The straightforward, traditional washed protocol is the defining approach here. It lets the naturally big apricot and jasmine character come through cleanly, which holds up in the slightly darker espresso roast.

THE CUP
Big and ripe: apricot leads, with a touch of pineapple and jasmine-like florals rounding out the cup. Works well as straight shots and Americanos.

Flavour Notes

About this variety

This is a mixed or locally selected coffee population rather than one precisely identified variety. Expect the lot’s tasting notes to be more useful than a single variety stereotype.

Why this one is different
  • Ethiopia
  • Yirgacheffe
  • Washed

In Ethiopia, local selection, replanting and farm history can shape a mixed population over many generations.

Washed processing can make acidity and variety character easier to read, although fermentation and drying choices still matter.

A little background

Several plant types may be growing and harvested together, often reflecting a farm or region’s planting history.

Classification Mixed population

Technical lineage The individual plants are not fully separated or identified, so a single genetic lineage would be misleading.

Variety is a guide, not a flavour guarantee. Lot notes are more specific.
