INTRO
Part of Terraform's Costa Rica variety series from Volcán Azul: a washed SL28 with a sweet, delicate character. In the cup: red apple, smoked plum, and cranberry.

THE PRODUCER
Volcán Azul is operated by the fifth generation of the family, Alejo Castro Kahle, producing high-quality coffee on the slopes of the Poás Volcano. Since placing second in the Costa Rica Cup of Excellence in 2017, the estate has continued to achieve remarkable results.

The SL series was developed by Kenya's Scott Laboratories in the 1930s, with SL28 selected in 1935 from a drought-resistant Tanzanian population. It is known for strong drought tolerance but is susceptible to diseases such as coffee leaf rust, and genetic testing has shown its close relationship to Bourbon.

THE PROCESS
This lot is Washed, a method that removes the fruit before fermentation and drying. It lets SL28's clean, sweet fruit character come through with clarity.

THE CUP
Sweet and delicate: red apple leads, with smoked plum through the middle and cranberry on the finish.

How it works The fruit is removed from the coffee seed. Water and fermentation then help clear away the sticky layer before the seed is dried.

About this variety

SL28 is often sought out for a vivid, juicy cup with bright acidity and a long, structured finish. Berry and citrus are common reference points, especially in high-grown lots.

Why this one is different
  • Costa Rica
  • Alajuela
  • 1700 masl
  • Washed

At Volcan Azul, washed SL28 is floral, sweet and lively, with plum and other stone fruit carried by bright acidity and a medium body. The Costa Rican volcanic setting gives this East African selection a distinctive expression rather than simply recreating a Kenyan cup. The farm and washed process are central to that balance.

Washed processing can make acidity and variety character easier to read, although fermentation and drying choices still matter.

A little background

Alejo Castro's SL28 has been cultivated and separated at Volcan Azul in Costa Rica's Central Valley across several seasons. This repeated farm traceability makes it a useful country-specific example while keeping the story tied to the producer rather than a national generalisation.

Identification note This context is anchored to one established Volcan Azul planting. Its floral, plum and stone-fruit profile is strong farm evidence, but it should not be treated as proof that every Costa Rican SL28 will taste the same.

Classification Kenyan selection

Technical lineage SL28 was selected in Kenya in the 1930s from Tanganyika Drought Resistant material and has a Bourbon-like genetic background. It is now also grown in parts of Latin America.

Variety is a guide, not a flavour guarantee. Lot notes are more specific.
