DETAILS

  • Producer: Albino Ibias
  • Farm: Tres Cedros
  • Region: Inkawasi, Cusco, Peru
  • Varietal: SL9*
  • Process: Washed
  • Altitude: 2,260 masl
  • Harvest: December 2025 (2nd pass)

INTRO The second harvest pass from Albino Ibias's farm arrives at an exciting moment — Tres Cedros is quickly gaining a reputation for producing some of the best coffee in Peru. A clean, tropical profile: star fruit, peach, and honeydew, with florals running throughout. In the cup: star fruit, peach, honeydew, and florals.

THE PRODUCER Albino Ibias farms Tres Cedros in one of the most compelling microclimates in the Cusco region, at excellent elevation just below the tallest waterfall in Inkawasi.

SL9 — colloquially known as "Gesha Inca" — was genetically tested and found to closely resemble SL09, a rare cultivar in the Ethiopian Legacy group. "SL" refers to single-tree selections made by Scott Agricultural Laboratories in the 1930s; while SL28, SL34, and Mibirizi are the most widely grown of these selections, SL09 — and by extension SL9 — remains uncommon in cultivation today. The variety's exact genetic fingerprint isn't yet in the global database, so "SL9" is used as a provisional working name, with ongoing conversations between geneticists and Inkawasi Valley communities about how it should ultimately be represented.

THE PROCESS The Washed process for this lot involves:

🍒 Hand-picking — cherries harvested at peak ripeness 💧 Floating — floated to further remove defects 🌱 Same-day de-pulping — de-pulped on the day of harvest ⏱️ Dry fermentation — fermented dry for 32 hours ☀️ Raised-bed drying — dried on raised beds

THE CUP Clean and tropical — star fruit and peach sweetness up front, a honeydew richness through the middle, and florals woven throughout.

Flavour Notes ⭐ Star Fruit 🍑 Peach 🍈 Honeydew 🌸 Florals

About this variety

SL9 coffees tend to be vivid and aromatic, with floral lift, lively fruit and a light tea-like structure. Roaster tasting notes often include rose, jasmine, honeysuckle, berries, peach and tropical fruit. Because the variety is newly documented, the individual coffee's tasting notes remain the sharper guide.

Why this one is different
  • Peru
  • Inkawasi, Cusco
  • 2260 masl
  • Washed

Roaster descriptions for Peruvian SL9 often highlight an aromatic, high-toned cup, with rose, jasmine, honeysuckle, berries, peach and tropical fruit. Washed processing can emphasise clarity and a tea-like finish, but the individual coffee's tasting notes remain primary.

Washed processing can make acidity and variety character easier to read, although fermentation and drying choices still matter.

A little background

Recent examples from specialist roasters are associated with Peru, including producers around Cusco. Public roaster sources describe the variety as newly documented and genetically connected to Ethiopian legacy material.

Identification note The public evidence supports the SL9 name in Peru but does not yet settle its exact ancestry.

Classification Reported Ethiopian-legacy-related selection

Technical lineage Exact parentage remains under-documented in public sources, so this context retains the supplied SL9 identity without a definitive lineage claim.

Variety is a guide, not a flavour guarantee. Lot notes are more specific.
