INTRO
Classic Ethiopian, classic Gesha — delicate stonefruit notes with floral complexity and sweetness are the calling cards for coffees from this region. This lot recalls fresh apricots on a warm summer's day alongside the sweetest white grape, complemented by fresh jasmine flowers. Perfectly balanced, this year's Gesha Village coffees are some of the best in a long time — which speaks volumes, given the farm's more than a decade of consistent excellence. In the cup: fresh apricot, white grape, and jasmine.
THE PRODUCER
Gesha Village Estate was founded in 2011 by Rachel Samuel and Adam Overton, whose passion for coffee, people, and Ethiopia was ignited after a 2007 visit. With the help of renowned coffee researcher Willem Boot, they established a nursery that would soon grow some of the best Ethiopian coffee available in the world. The farm sits over 2,000 masl, among the highest-altitude farms on the continent, and is divided into eight sub-farms, each with its own microclimate and resulting cup profile. Most production consists of Gori Gesha and Gesha 1931, with smaller lots dedicated to research varieties. The team has dedicated significant resources to reforestation and agroforestry, uses water and raw materials sparingly with full recycling on-farm, founded Gesha Village High School in 2021, and runs a beekeeping programme to further uplift the surrounding ecosystem.
THE PROCESS
Gesha Village takes a classic approach to natural processing, drying the coffee on raised beds in cherry with frequent agitation to ensure even drying. The cherry is then removed and the coffee prepared for export.
This lot is Gesha 1931 — a variety collected from the surrounding forests, known to closely resemble the famous Panamanian Gesha coffees that in part inspired the estate's founding in the first place.
THE CUP
Delicate and floral — fresh apricot sweetness leads, alongside the sweetest white grape, complemented by fresh jasmine aromatics. Perfectly balanced, from one of the farm's finest years in over a decade of consistent excellence.
