Panama — Wilford Lamastus Elida Estate Falda Geisha (Natural)

Tastes Like — 🍐 Pear • 🍓 Strawberry • 🍊 Bergamot • 🌹 Rose Flowers

DETAILS

  • Producer: Elida Estate, Wilford Lamastus
  • Farm: Elida Estate, Falda plot
  • Region: Alto Quiel, Boquete, Panama
  • Varietal: Geisha
  • Process: Natural
  • Score: 90
  • Harvest: March 5, 2026

INTRO From the prestigious Lamastus family at their renowned Elida Estate — a natural Geisha grown specifically on the Falda plot, revealing an aromatic profile of immense elegance. Complex and delicate, refined notes of pear, strawberry, bergamot, and rose flowers intertwine throughout. In the cup: pear, strawberry, bergamot, and rose flowers.

THE PRODUCER Lamastus Family Estates represents four generations of excellence. Founded in 1918 by Robert Louis Lamastus, a former soldier from Kentucky, Elida Estate sits on the slopes of Volcán Barú, near Panama's national nature reserve. Today, the family holds three emblematic properties: Elida Estate, one of Panama's highest coffee farms at 1,700–2,060m; El Burro Estate and Luito Geisha Estates; and the recent addition of Lulo Estate — all cultivated across rich volcanic soils and an optimal microclimate.

In 2024, Elida Estate won the Geisha Natural category at Best of Panama, with a lot sold at private auction for $10,013 per kilogram, breaking the world record. With seven Best of Panama victories, Lamastus holds the second-best performance in the competition's history, along with four Panama Cup wins — the most ever earned.

Elida itself sits at Alto Quiel near Boquete, the highest farm in the country, spanning 65 hectares — 35 cultivated (mostly Geisha, Catuaí, and a little Typica), with the rest held as forest reserve integrated into the Volcán Barú national park. The coffee grows within a primary cloud forest microclimate, with natural shade cover, rich volcanic soil, and strong biodiversity.

THE PROCESS This lot is a Natural — cherries are dried whole, allowing the fruit to impart its character directly into the bean. This approach is what builds the elegant pear, strawberry, and rose flower complexity that define this cup, grown specifically on the Falda plot's distinct microclimate.

THE CUP Complex and delicate — pear and strawberry sweetness intertwined with bergamot brightness and a rose flower florality throughout. Medium acidity, a silky body, and a light roast let this exceptional Geisha's full elegance show.

About this variety

Coffees reported as Gesha or Geisha are often prized for a delicate, tea-like cup with lifted floral aromas and bright fruit. Jasmine, bergamot and peach are common reference points, but each lot can express them differently.

Why this one is different
  • Panama
  • Boquete
  • Natural

Panamanian Geisha, especially well-traced T2722 grown at high altitude, is the classic reference for a very delicate, jasmine-led and peach-like cup.

Natural processing often brings a rounder, fruit-led expression, which can make the same variety feel quite different from a washed lot.

Why the Gesha / Geisha name matters

Gesha and Geisha are interchangeable spellings, not proof of different varieties. The best-documented Panamanian Geisha descends from Ethiopian material recorded as T2722, while other coffees carrying either spelling may not be genetically identical.

Classification Reported Gesha / Geisha

Technical lineage The reported name alone does not establish one genetic lineage. Confirmed Panamanian T2722 traces to Ethiopian landrace material.

Variety is a guide, not a flavour guarantee. Lot notes are more specific.
