INTRO A first-time collaboration with Hacienda El Obraje — a rare Moka varietal, a cultivar more commonly associated with Yemen, thoughtfully planted and cultivated in the Colombian Andes. Confectionery aromatics filled with wine-like fruit and warm spice echo the profile that's made Yemeni coffees so distinctive, while feeling unmistakably its own through a brighter, red fruit-driven expression. In the cup: strawberry, plum, nutmeg, and black tea.
THE PRODUCER Pablo Andrés Guerrero, an architect born in Pasto, comes from a family with no coffee-growing background. He began farming cereal and fruit crops in 1988, and didn't start growing coffee until 2012. Hacienda El Obraje sits in Tangua, southern Nariño, at an average altitude of 2,200 masl, about 25 minutes from the department's capital. Fifty-five percent of the farm's area is set aside as an environmental reserve, home to a wide variety of native flora and fauna. Approximately 39 hectares are under cultivation, spread across varieties including Caturra, Castillo, Maracaturra, Geisha, Typica, Yellow Bourbon, Pink Bourbon, Moka, and SL28.
THE PROCESS This lot begins with traditional flotation sorting, followed by 120 hours of fermentation in hermetically sealed tanks. The cherries are then shade-dried for 8 days, before finishing with 38 hours of mechanical drying at 30°C.
The extended 120-hour sealed fermentation is the defining step — it's what amplifies Moka's naturally expressive character, building the wine-like fruit intensity and warm spice that define this cup.
THE CUP Confectionery and spiced — the cup moves between sweet strawberry and ripe plum, with festive nutmeg warmth throughout. A gentle black tea finish brings subtle tannins, giving the coffee structure and tying together its layered sweetness and spice. The beans are strikingly small, a hallmark of the Moka varietal, while the cup delivers impressive depth and character.
