INTRO
Currant Mood is a classic Nyeri Kenya — the kind of cup that reminds you why this origin has such an enduring reputation. Dense, structured, and vibrantly juicy, it leads with blackcurrant jam and a rose-like florality, finishing with the dry elegance of black tea. Precisely what a great Kenyan washed lot should be.
THE PRODUCER
Tekangu Farmers Cooperative Society is based in Nyeri County, in the central highlands of Kenya — one of the country's most celebrated coffee-growing regions. Smallholder members cultivate SL-28, SL-34, Batian, and Ruiru 11 on small plots of fertile volcanic soil in the foothills between Mount Kenya and the Aberdare Range. High elevation and cool nights consistently produce coffees with vibrant acidity and complex fruit.
Processing at Tekangu follows Kenya's traditional double-fermentation washed method — a meticulous approach that underpins the clarity and structure for which Nyeri coffees are globally recognised. Ripe cherries are handpicked, depulped, fermented, washed thoroughly, soaked in clean water, and dried slowly on raised beds with regular turning and sorting.
THE PROCESS
The Washed process at Tekangu involves:
- 🍒 Hand Harvesting — Selective picking of ripe red cherries
- 🔧 Depulping — Skins removed the same day at the cooperative's wet mill
- 📅 Double Fermentation — Parchment fermented in tanks, washed, then soaked in clean water
- 💧 Washing Channels — Mucilage removed thoroughly for a clean, transparent cup
- ☀️ Raised-Bed Drying — Slow drying on raised beds with frequent turning and quality sorting
- ✅ Grading — AA grade: large, dense beans with exceptional cup potential
This rigorous process produces the dense, juicy clarity and dark-fruit brightness that defines the finest Nyeri washed lots.
THE CUP
Blackcurrant jam leads the way, with a lifted rose-like florality and the dry, elegant finish of a quality black tea. Dense, structured, and deeply satisfying — a textbook Nyeri Kenya in the best possible sense.
