INTRO A coffee that almost never made it — Daniela Rodriguez offered this lot to make up volume on a container that was about to leave, describing it as "very unique and exotic." She was right: this naturally processed Kenyan variety blend almost tastes like an Ethiopian natural, with forest fruits, berry jam, and sloe plum running throughout. In the cup: forest fruits, berry jam, and sloe plum.
THE PRODUCER This lot comes from the Los Rodriguez family's Agricafé operation in Bolivia, a pioneering force in South American specialty coffee since 1986, now run by Daniela and her brother Pedro Pablo alongside their father Pedro. This particular lot came about almost by accident — offered up to fill out a shipment, and turning out to be a genuine standout.
The Kenyan varieties SL28, SL34, and Batian are unusual to find grown in Bolivia, giving this lot an especially distinctive character for the region.
THE PROCESS This lot is a Natural — cherries are dried whole, allowing the fruit to impart its character directly into the bean. This approach is what builds the deep forest fruit, berry jam, and sloe plum character, giving the cup an Ethiopian natural-like intensity despite its Kenyan varietal base.
THE CUP Unique and exotic — forest fruits and berry jam sweetness throughout, with a distinct sloe plum depth. Reminiscent of an Ethiopian natural, but with its own unmistakable Bolivian character.
