INTRO
A light roast with blueberry, floral, and bergamot notes from a second-generation producer in Yirgacheffe. In the cup: blueberry, floral, and bergamot.
THE PRODUCER
Ato Mitiku Kebede is a dynamic, second-generation specialty producer who manages a 3.14-hectare estate at high altitude in Gerisse, Yirgacheffe. The 36-year-old father of four learned agronomy young, working alongside his father after school. When his father passed away in 2012, Mitiku took full responsibility for the family legacy, modernising the old, vulnerable plantation by integrating disease-resistant JARC varieties (74110, 74112, and 74148). Guided by agricultural experts, the estate now produces impressive quality and quantity each year. By drying his harvest on modern raised African beds for impeccable quality control, Mitiku honours his father's vision while establishing himself as a top-tier specialty producer.
Avalanche sourced the lot through This Side Up, via Mocca, run by sisters Tsedenia and Altayen, whose family has been in coffee since the 1990s. They work with smallholders growing under agroforestry, every lot is fully traceable, and Mocca's own dry and wet mills let them process in different ways to bring out the range of Ethiopian flavour. Tsedenia returns to the same producers each year, which makes single-farmer lots possible.
THE PROCESS
This lot is a Natural: cherries are dried whole on modern raised African beds, letting the fruit's sugars pass into the bean. The page doesn't give further processing steps.
THE CUP
Light, floral, and fruit-forward: blueberry leads, with floral aromatics and a bergamot lift.
