INTRO
This microlot was processed at the Gatuya Coffee Factory, one of two washing stations operated by the New Murandia Farmers Cooperative Society — a light roast with cola, currant, and cherry character. In the cup: cola, currant, and cherry.
THE PRODUCER
The New Murandia Farmers Cooperative Society has around 3,500 smallholder producer members, each farming roughly a fifth to a third of a hectare, delivering coffee in cherry to the Gatuya factory. Murang'a sits on the western slope of the Aberdare Mountains, where red, rich soil and cooler-than-average weather support strong coffee production — around 80% of the local population relies on farming and agriculture.
THE PROCESS
Coffee is picked ripe and depulped the same day, then fermented in open-air concrete tanks for one to two days. It's washed thoroughly using water channels, then soaked underwater for 12 to 72 hours — a soaking step fairly unique to Kenyan processing — before spreading on raised beds to dry in the sun.
The extended underwater soak following channel washing is the defining step — it's what builds the clean cola and currant character behind this cup, with cherry sweetness rounding out the finish.
THE CUP
Clean and structured — cola-like sweetness leads, with a tart currant character through the middle and a cherry finish.
