  • Region: Bensa, Sidama, Ethiopia
  • Varietal: JARC 74158
  • Process: Washed

INTRO

A first release from the highly revered Shantawene washing station — a rare, fully washed expression of JARC 74158, one of Apollon's Gold's absolute favourite Ethiopian varieties. An exceptional sensory experience from a station they have long wanted to work with. In the cup: white peach, jasmine, and lychee.

THE PRODUCER

Shantawene is a washing station in the Bensa district of Sidama — one of Ethiopia's most celebrated growing regions, known for its extraordinary biodiversity of indigenous landrace and JARC varieties and the exceptional high-altitude conditions that define its finest lots. JARC 74158 — developed by the Jimma Agricultural Research Centre and catalogued in 1974 for its resistance to coffee berry disease and quality potential at altitude — is a variety that consistently rewards careful washed processing, revealing a delicate, aromatic, and fruit-forward cup that ranks among the most compelling expressions of Ethiopian specialty coffee. This inaugural release from Shantawene marks the beginning of a relationship that Apollon's Gold have been working toward with real anticipation.

THE PROCESS

The Washed process at Shantawene involves:

🍒 Hand-picking — JARC 74158 cherries selectively harvested at peak ripeness 🔧 Pulping — Outer skin removed before fermentation 🧪 Fermentation — Beans fermented to break down remaining mucilage 💧 Washing — Thoroughly washed after fermentation to remove all residue ☀️ Raised-bed drying — Dried on raised beds to optimal moisture content

The meticulous washed processing is the defining step — by stripping back all fruit influence, the process allows the intrinsic white peach sweetness, jasmine florality, and lychee character of JARC 74158 at Shantawene to express themselves with the exceptional clarity that makes this variety and this station so compelling.

THE CUP

A rare and beautifully refined washed JARC 74158 from one of Sidama's most highly revered washing stations — white peach sweetness, jasmine florality, and lychee in a clean, aromatic cup that fully justifies the anticipation behind this inaugural release.

About this variety

Several varieties make up this lot. That can create a layered cup, but their individual flavours cannot be separated honestly after the coffee is combined.

Why this one is different
  • Ethiopia
  • Gedeb
  • Washed

These varieties were grown or combined in Ethiopia. The producer’s lot details and tasting notes are the best guide to how they work together.

Washed processing can make acidity and variety character easier to read, although fermentation and drying choices still matter.
