INTRO
A red honey processed 74158 from Hure, a young coffee-growing area in Arbegona. At 2,400+ masl, the greater day-night temperature swing means a longer growth cycle and more sugar accumulation. In the cup: lime, lychee, and a green tea finish.
THE PRODUCER
Bursa Coffee's founder, Mulugeta Muntasha, has been deeply involved in coffee for over 30 years. In Bursa, Arbegona, he works with approximately 300 smallholder farmers growing 74158 organically, and Bursa purchases over 1.2 million kilograms of ripe red cherries each year. Early in his career he faced extremely low coffee prices, with farmers unwilling to grow coffee; he later decided to expand and focus on high-quality coffee. Five years ago his eldest son, Degefu Mulugeta, graduated from university, and together they transformed the supply chain and founded Bursa Coffee.
Hure is a village-level administrative unit in Arbegona at 2,400 meters. Bursa chose it for its future potential: the trees are generally five years old or younger, showing youthful, high-quality growth, and of Arbegona's thirty-plus village districts only a handful suit coffee. Hure is one of the newest developed areas, and apart from Bursa there are no other processing stations there. They also support local development by teaching planting techniques, training farmers, and distributing 74158 seedlings to the community, giving neighbours who see the profits of high-quality coffee a reason to join.
THE PROCESS
This lot is a Red Honey: the cherries are pulped leaving a moderate amount of mucilage on the seed, then dried, building sweetness and body. The page doesn't give further steps.
THE CUP
