DETAILS

  • Producer: Marcial Huanca
  • Farm: Finca Palmar
  • Region: Caranavi, Bolivia
  • Varietal: Java
  • Process: Washed
  • Harvest: 2025

INTRO
This washed Java from Marcial Huanca at Finca Palmar was depulped, fermented, and carefully dried to let the variety speak clearly. Honey sweetness opens the nose, followed by delicate white and yellow florals that drift through the cup with a soft, clean texture. In the cup: honey, white florals, and yellow florals.

THE PRODUCER
Marcial Huanca is a small-scale producer based in the community of 25 de Abril in the Caranavi growing region of Bolivia, and a member of Cooperative Mejillones. He's also a certified Q-grader who has judged at Cup of Excellence and Cup of Fair Trade competitions previously held in Bolivia, bringing technical depth to his farming well beyond the average smallholder. His focus on quality and direct involvement in the specialty market have made Finca Palmar a reliable source of clean, expressive lots from one of South America's most promising coffee regions.

Java is an Ethiopian landrace selection that travelled via Indonesia and Cameroon before reaching Central America, where it's now widely cultivated in specialty coffee. Genetically, it's classified as an Ethiopian landrace type rather than a true Typica, despite early reports. The variety produces elongated, bronze-tipped beans and is prized for disease tolerance and low input requirements.

THE PROCESS
This lot is Washed, a method that removes the fruit before fermentation and drying — allowing Java's naturally refined, soft sweetness and delicate floral accents to come through, building the honey and floral character that define this cup.

THE CUP
Delicate and clean — honey sweetness opens the nose, followed by soft white and yellow florals drifting through with a gentle texture. Acidity is very low, and the finish is gentle and round.

About this variety

Java can feel floral and refined in clean washed coffees, while natural and extended-fermentation lots can become fuller and more tropical. Roaster tasting notes across the reviewed coffees include jasmine, mandarin, white peach, pineapple, red fruit, molasses and wine-like sweetness. The individual coffee's process and tasting notes remain the sharper guide.

Why this one is different
  • Bolivia
  • Caranavi
  • Washed

Washed processing can make acidity and variety character easier to read, although fermentation and drying choices still matter.

Growing conditions in Caranavi are another reason this coffee may differ from the same variety grown elsewhere.

A little background

Java has a long international history. World Coffee Research records that it was taken directly from Ethiopia to the island of Java by the Dutch in the early nineteenth century. It was later selected in Cameroon for smallholder growing conditions and disease tolerance before reaching Central America. Its name reflects an important stage in that journey, not its genetic origin.

Identification note Java was once treated as a Typica selection, but World Coffee Research reports that genetic fingerprinting identifies it as a selection from an Ethiopian landrace population called Abysinia.

Classification Ethiopian landrace selection

Technical lineage A selection from the Abysinia Ethiopian landrace population, according to World Coffee Research genetic fingerprinting.

Variety is a guide, not a flavour guarantee. Lot notes are more specific.
