INTRO
A classic representation of SL28 from POMA's research station in Denmark, showing the robust fruitiness characteristic of the variety. Ripe aromas of rhubarb, tangerine, and lilac come together in a balanced, juicy cup with a long, sweet aftertaste like spring honey. In the cup: rhubarb, tangerine, lilac, and spring honey.

THE PRODUCER
POMA's Coffee Research Station was established eight years ago in a climate-controlled greenhouse in Fyn, Denmark. Inside it, environmental factors are manipulated using algorithms that mimic plant processes, letting the team study how coffee trees react to climate change while keeping a stable environment for investigating the impact of farming practices.

THE PROCESS
The cherries first spent 48 hours in cold storage at 8°C. This gentle chilling preserves and intensifies the coffee's aromas without inducing fermentation, safeguarding its natural taste profile. The cherries were then depulped, thoroughly washed, and dried at low temperatures in a pressurised, rotating tumble dryer, an even drying that gives a clean, crisp finished product.

The 48-hour cold rest at 8°C, with no fermentation, is the defining step. It's what intensifies the aromatics and keeps the cup clean, letting SL28's robust fruit character come through.

THE CUP
Juicy and balanced: rhubarb and tangerine lead, with lilac florality and a long, sweet aftertaste like spring honey.

About this variety

SL28 is often sought out for a vivid, juicy cup with bright acidity and a long, structured finish. Berry and citrus are common reference points, especially in high-grown lots.

Why this one is different
  • Denmark
  • Fyn
  • 1800 (simulated) masl
  • Washed

In Denmark, SL28 is an introduced selection. Its cup may differ from the Kenyan reference because the climate, soil and processing are different.

Washed processing can make acidity and variety character easier to read, although fermentation and drying choices still matter.

A little background

SL28 was selected in Kenya by Scott Agricultural Laboratories during the 1930s. It is valued for drought tolerance and exceptional quality potential at suitable altitude.

Classification Kenyan selection

Technical lineage A selection from the Tanganyika Drought Resistant population, with a Bourbon-related genetic background.
