INTRO
After first tasting this coffee as roasted by Terraform and being blown away, Mirra reached out to Servio immediately, and he had just a bit left from the latest harvest. While naturals aren't their go-to, the cleanness of this coffee earned it a spot. A cloud of marshmallow cream and sugar, like in some of the best Ecuadorian coffees, enlivened by a backbone of zesty clementine acidity and delicate, aromatic violets. In the cup: marshmallow cream, clementine, and violets.
THE PRODUCER
Finca Clara Luz has rapidly become one of Mirra's all-time favourites in Ecuador. It sits at 1,720 masl near the town of Las Ardas in the Loja region, where the Gonzalez family has been tenants since 1955, when they purchased it from the Cueva family, who founded the farm in 1920. Until 2014 the farm grew only Typica for commercial and domestic consumption, until the family decided to replace their Typica plots with Sidra, Yellow Bourbon, Batian, and Geisha.
Geisha is one of the most prized varieties for its exceptional quality potential and intense, even perfumed florality, sweetness, and clarity. An Ethiopian heirloom first identified in the 1930s in the forests of Gori Gesha, it attracted global attention in 2005 when the Peterson family of Hacienda La Esmeralda won Best of Panama with a Geisha lot, and it is now heavily represented among Cup of Excellence winners.
THE PROCESS
This lot is a Natural: cherries are dried whole, letting the fruit's sugars pass into the bean. The result is notably clean for a natural, with the marshmallow sweetness and violet aromatics Geisha is known for.
THE CUP
Sweet, bright, and aromatic: marshmallow cream and sugar sweep in first, enlivened by zesty clementine acidity and delicate violets. Not to be missed.
