INTRO
Look who's back: Paola Trujillo is a name Mirra always welcomes back with pride and excitement. One of the producers they work with most closely in Colombia, her latest release opens a selection of her best with this Pink Bourbon (and a Wush Wush). Classic Pink Bourbon blood orange juiciness, slightly tannic yet refreshing Darjeeling tea, and white elderflower petals on the finish. In the cup: blood orange, Darjeeling tea, and white elderflower.
THE PRODUCER
Patio Bonito has been in the Trujillo family for two generations, founded by Paola's father, Carlos Trujillo, who is ceding increasing authority to his daughters Paola and Patricia as they learn the art of coffee cultivation from his 40+ years as a coffee farmer and agroforestry engineer. The 9-hectare farm sits at 1,700 masl and is planted with over 45,000 trees of Castillo, Typica, Colombia, Pink Bourbon, Sidra, Wush Wush, SL28, Geisha, and Aji.
Pink Bourbon is a relatively uncommon variety, first identified in 2013 and grown almost exclusively in Colombia, known for citric acidity, honeyed sweetness, and strong florality. Its genetic heritage is uncertain, but it is most likely an Ethiopian landrace that made its way to Colombia, like Chiroso, Geisha, Mejorada, Papayo, Sidra, Aji, and Wush Wush, which fits its florality, closer to a washed Ethiopian landrace or Panamanian Geisha than to a typical Colombian Bourbon. Its sugars, like Red Bourbon, are predominantly glucose, giving a smooth, silk-like body.
THE PROCESS
The page doesn't specify the processing steps for this lot. Pink Bourbon's glucose-dominant sugars give it a smooth, silky body, and the florality and citric brightness point to a clean, careful preparation.
THE CUP
Juicy and refreshing: classic Pink Bourbon blood orange juiciness, slightly tannic Darjeeling tea through the middle, and white elderflower petals on the finish, with a smooth, silk-like body.
