INTRO
A wonderful set of coffees from José Giraldo's Las Marías estate, with the same producer, estate, and variety but different plots and processing. This plot is Rio Dulce, a Green-tip Gesha planting that was double washed, offering superlative clarity in the cup. The roaster thinks it is the cleanest cup on their menu this year. In the cup: white grape, gardenia, and orange blossom.

THE PRODUCER
José Giraldo produces this Gesha at the Las Marías estate in Pijao, Quindío, from the Rio Dulce plot. The page gives no further producer background.

THE PROCESS
This lot is Double Washed: the coffee goes through two washing stages for exceptional clarity and well-defined character. The page doesn't give further steps.

The double washing is the defining step. It's what gives the cup its transparency, softness, and defined florals.

THE CUP
Exceptional clarity and well-defined character: white grape, gardenia, and orange blossom, with florals abounding in incredible definition and complexity. Compared to its partner lot it is a bit softer and shows a bit more tropical complexity. The acidity is glassy and soft-tart, the sweetness subdued and nectar-like, and the finish a lingering floral.

Flavour Notes
🍇 White Grape 🌼 Gardenia 🌸 Orange Blossom

How it works The fruit is removed from the coffee seed. Water and fermentation then help clear away the sticky layer before the seed is dried.

About this variety

Coffees reported as Gesha or Geisha are often prized for a delicate, tea-like cup with lifted floral aromas and bright fruit. Jasmine, bergamot and peach are common reference points, but each lot can express them differently.

Why this one is different
  • Colombia
  • Quindío
  • Washed

This is a Colombian expression, so it should not be expected to match a Panamanian Geisha exactly. The farm, growing conditions and lot notes matter more than the spelling.

Washed processing can make acidity and variety character easier to read, although fermentation and drying choices still matter.

Why the Gesha / Geisha name matters

Gesha and Geisha are interchangeable spellings, not proof of different varieties. The best-documented Panamanian Geisha and a Colombian research sample have matched T2722, but country and spelling do not prove that every farm planting is identical.

Classification Reported Gesha / Geisha

Technical lineage The reported name alone does not establish one genetic lineage. Confirmed Panamanian T2722 traces to Ethiopian landrace material.

Variety is a guide, not a flavour guarantee. Lot notes are more specific.
