INTRO From Kotowa Duncan Farm, a fourth-generation family estate on the volcanic slopes of Boquete — this Ethiopian Heirloom Natural combines Ethiopian heritage with Panama's exceptional terroir. Rose and cherry jam lead, with dried fig depth and a Beaujolais wine-like complexity. In the cup: rose, cherry jam, dried fig, and Beaujolais wine.

THE PRODUCER Kotowa is one of Panama's oldest and most respected coffee producers. The name comes from the indigenous Ngäbe language, meaning "mountains," reflecting the estate's deep connection to the Boquete highlands. The family's coffee story began in the early 1900s, when Alexander Duncan MacIntyre established one of Panama's first coffee estates and built one of the country's earliest coffee mills. More than a century later, Kotowa has grown into a collection of five farms — including Duncan, this lot's namesake — each with its own altitude, microclimate, and varieties, managed today by Ricardo Koyner and the fourth generation of the Koyner family. Kotowa is internationally recognised for processing innovation and consistent Best of Panama success, having won championships in both the Geisha and Traditional Variety categories.

THE PROCESS This lot is a Natural — cherries are dried whole, allowing the fruit to impart its character directly into the bean. This approach is what builds the vibrant rose and cherry jam sweetness that define this cup, layered with dried fig depth and wine-like complexity.

THE CUP Vibrant and complex — expressive rose florals lead, with cherry jam sweetness and dried fig depth through the middle, finishing on a wine-like Beaujolais note. Elegant complexity from a farm built on generations of innovation.

About this variety

This is a mixed or locally selected coffee population rather than one precisely identified variety. Expect the lot’s tasting notes to be more useful than a single variety stereotype.

Why this one is different
  • Panama
  • Boquete
  • 1650-1750 masl
  • Natural

In Panama, local selection, replanting and farm history can shape a mixed population over many generations.

Natural processing often brings a rounder, fruit-led expression, which can make the same variety feel quite different from a washed lot.

A little background

Several plant types may be growing and harvested together, often reflecting a farm or region’s planting history.

Classification Mixed population

Technical lineage The individual plants are not fully separated or identified, so a single genetic lineage would be misleading.

Variety is a guide, not a flavour guarantee. Lot notes are more specific.
