INTRO

Datura selected this lot directly at the farm during our trip to Panama, a coffee that immediately stood out for its striking aromatic profile. A clean and refined natural, where the process stays light, letting the Gesha’s character come through with precision.

From the Amelia Estate in Jaramillo, this natural-processed Gesha from the Lérida group offers a more expressive, fruit-forward interpretation of the variety. Dried whole in the cherry, the coffee develops a richer texture and deeper fruity complexity — strawberry, ripe peach, and chamomile — whilst retaining the characteristic floral lift of Panamanian Gesha. The result is a cup that's decadent yet composed, with fruit sweetness and florality working in harmony rather than tension.

THE PRODUCER

Maria Antonella Amoruso manages the five-plantation Lérida Coffee enterprise in Boquete, Panama. The Lérida group spans the flagship Finca Lérida in Alto Quiel alongside Michella and Flora in Volcancito, and Amelia and Esplendorosa in the Jaramillo sub-region. A consistent presence at the Best of Panama competition over nearly two decades, Lérida has earned top honours in Gesha Washed, Gesha Natural, and Varietals categories — including first place in Washed Gesha in 2019.

Amelia Estate, located in Jaramillo at altitude, is one of the higher-grown lots in the Lérida portfolio, benefiting from the cool temperatures and slow cherry maturation that make Jaramillo one of Panama's most prized growing sub-regions. Maria's commitment to worker welfare — housing, food assistance, schooling for employees' children — has been a consistent part of the Lérida operation alongside its relentless focus on quality.

THE PROCESS

The Natural process at Amelia Estate involves:

  • 🍒 Selective Harvest — Ripe cherries selectively hand-picked at peak ripeness
  • Flotation Sorting — Cherries floated and sorted for ripeness and density
  • ☀️ Whole Cherry Drying — Cherries dried intact on patios and raised beds
  • 📅 Extended Drying Period — Slow, even drying with frequent turning to ensure uniformity
  • 🔧 Dry Milling — Parchment and dried fruit removed after full drying

Drying the coffee whole in its cherry allows the natural fruit sugars and aromatic compounds to transfer into the bean over an extended period, producing the richer body and fruit-forward sweetness characteristic of natural-processed Panamanian Gesha.

THE CUP

A lush and heady natural Gesha that showcases the variety at its most expressive. Blueberry leads with a deep, jammy intensity, lifted by the delicate floral perfume of violet. Bergamot adds an elegant citrus aromatic dimension — bright and fragrant without sharpness — whilst ripe mango rounds out the finish with a long, tropical sweetness. Rich, layered, and captivating from first sip to last.
